She looked at me with glistening eyes, smiling shyly. I was unable to turn my eyes away. She was anything but beautiful, in a way that was taught to me as beautiful. Her skin was too dark, her mouth too wide, her eyes too small. Her smile shone like the sun.

I had never given it a thought. Beautiful words and creatures couldn’t exist in my world. Nothing was enough, she deserved better. As she fell to the floor the first time, my heart stopped. She was pale, had been for a long time. In that moment I should have let her go.

The light faded slowly, day by day. I prayed for the goddess to save her, cried out to life to aid her. Even the priests were unable to help her. And I, I was helpless as a wingless bird. I had never looked back after leaving the temple. Now I would have returned if it had saved my glass rose.

She was sleeping quietly, smiling her blissful smile. I hugged her, unable to feel anything. Not sorrow, not pain. Not even regret. She was gone, everything was gone. Had she never met me, she could still shine. I had burned out her flames, used her light to keep away my endless darkness.

I looked for the lost source of light from the world. Every shining smile, every shimmering look was a sign of her. I tried to get her out of them, to release her, and put her together again. The smiles faded too soon, eyes reflected only fear. No matter how far I looked for her, I never found a single part of the light. Searching, searching endlessly. She didn’t come to me, didn’t want to be found. I swore to the moon I would find her. Before I succeed, not even death could reach me.
