She was born into luxury. A princess, of the most prosperous kingdom that the universe had never seen, and that was precisely how they liked it.

The Lunar Kingdom, nestled away on the dark side of the Moon, had existed for thousands of years, a flourishing jewel on an otherwise barren landscape. The semi-divine descendants of the lunar kami Tsukuyomi ruled over the descendants of the followers that ran away to the sanctuary when marriage bonds dissolved and the sun refused to share the sky with the moon any longer. When that happened, the Earth became the domain of the Sun, warmed by her light, and the humans became her blessed people, so the Moon decided it had to have its own blessed people. As such, the Lunarians were born, people touched with the moon's magic, practically minor kami all on their own because of it.

On a night where the sky felt brighter than usual, the queen of Tsuki-jo had a child. A daughter. With the assistance of the steadfast advisor Omoikane, a figure that had stood by and given careful advice to any who asked, the queen's new daughter was delivered with little issue and deemed perfectly healthy. An auspicious sign on such an unusual night.

Kaguya was her name, given to her by the unusual brightness of the sky on that night. Though she was not particularly important in terms of birth order--the fifth child and third daughter--when she was presented to Tsukuyomi three days after her birth, something about her piqued the kami's attention. There was something about her. A spark of power, the likes of which they had never seen before. It was faint since Kaguya was still just a newborn, but in time, Tsukuyomi knew very well what such power could do. They did not let it show, but they knew very well they needed to keep a close eye on this girl.

Omoikane had noticed the spark of power as well, so perhaps it was no surprise when Tsukuyomi instructed the advisor to begin tutoring the girl when she became old enough to begin lessons.

Though her formal studies did not begin until she turned three, Kaguya proved to be an inquisitive child even before that. Though she was not a troublemaker, she did enjoy knowing what things were. A neverending stream of questions always peppered her mother, her father, her nursemaids, her elder brothers and sisters, and to "Omoikane-tan," the figure that always hung around her family, usually in hushed discussions with her father, or standing silently by his side when official business was happening.

Though she was a curious child, Kaguya was, perhaps, not the most eager student at first. While her sisters got to enjoy trying on new clothing, going with her mother to visit other noble families, and learning how to dance and play musical instruments, Kaguya was with Omoikane, learning how to read and write, and how to perform basic magic. These things weren't nearly as interesting to young Kaguya as what her sisters were doing, however, so time and time again, she tried to escape to go and do what her sisters did. This could take the form of lying to Omoikane that she wasn't feeling well, then sneaking out of her room, or trying to distract her teacher by claiming there was something in the room, and making her getaway that way. These things never worked, of course, but there were the times that Omoikane did go looking for that strange bird that was hiding behind the wall scroll, or the times she turned her back just long enough for Kaguya to slip out. It would take Kaguya far longer than she would like to admit to realize that Omoikane had been playing along the whole time when she allowed those to happen.

In time, however, Kaguya grew to enjoy her studies, perhaps thanks to Omoikane being so good at tailoring lessons to keep her interest. She learned about the history of Tsuki-jo, about the history of the kami and the creation of the entire universe. She learned about animals that lived on the Earth (though she knew all too well what a terrible place that was down below). She learned how to perform magical spells, from conjuring up basic orbs of light to illuminate a room, to things as complex as bringing time to a crawl, or even being able to see glimpses of the past or the future as if she were standing right there in it. By the time she was ten, she and Omoikane could often recite whole epic works of poetry back and forth to each other, going for dozens or hundreds of lines before leaving off abruptly so the other could pick up without missing a beat.
