Shadow the Coal Fiend

When I was little my mother used to tell me stories. Stories about a land far far away where the sky was blue and you could drink the water directly from the river without fear of it being polluted. Where people had skin as white and shiny as Diamonds and wore the most beautiful dresses.

Of course those were just demontales told to the children of the mines, no such world existed! All there was outside the mines of Darkside was smog so dirty that it made your face even more ashy then the coal you dug up! Some days were good though; I'd find lots and lots of coal. Enough to have one whole sP left over for myself after I've paid the daily tribute to Miss Maleria. so it really wasn't so bad of a life.

Today wasn't one of those days however; there was a cave in the southwest mine and I had to leave the cart behind, which meant that I'd sleep with no supper tonight. when night came I went back home and curled up in my bed, I hadn't eaten for two days now and my tummy was starting to hurt, that's when I saw it out of the corner of my eye, a shadow demon! There are lots of those in the mines and they really can't do anything but make weird shadow figures when you shine your lamp in there. I didn't want to waste the oil in the lamp so a struck a match and watched the demon dance in the light of the flames. It was so funny that once the match died I struck a second and then a third. In no time at all I had gone through an entire box of matches and now had none left for the demon. It's really hard to see them in the darkness; they tend to hide in the corner of your eye or in the edges of a mirror.

We didn't have one of those for the demon to play with so again I curled up in my little bed and tried to think of tomorrow, yes tomorrow I'll have lots and lots of coal and buy lots of food! The thought of food made my tummy growl again and I couldn't sleep. I snuck my hand under my bed and retrieved my treasure. It always made feel a better. Last year Mister Euclid asked some of us to test his new zapping machine, some of us ended up…. Not so well… but nothing happened to me. He gave each of us a box of chocolates as a thank you, mine was the prettiest! A big red heart with lots of pink ribbons. Sometimes when I'm feeling sad I'd take it out and open it. There's no more chocolate in it but the smell still lingers, and so holding it tight, I go to sleep and dream of a land full of candy just for me.
