The tiny Asian deli smelled of simmering beaf and exotic spices as he swung the door open and stepped inside, the chimes on the door ringing merrily. In truth there was nothing merry about the deli. The neon Closed sign had been turned on, casting red light into the entrance way.
He stayed in the illumination from the sign, as if the dull light would serve as protection from what lurked within. Glancing to his right he noticed a fish tank, a large white fish floating upside down along the multi-colored gravel. As he watched its long decorative fins shivered in the water, gills still moving as it hung in the current, it's body curved into the shape of a 7, as if its spine had been snapped in half.
"We're closed." His head snapped up, eyes searching. As he looked, a shadow shifting behind the counter, the man bent over slowly rose, standing straight. Despite the gloom, he could see what no human was supposed to. Fae were creatures of secrecy and masters of illusion, but he'd been born with the Sight to see what they tried so hard to hide.
The man's eyes bulged like a frogs, his pupils taking up almost his entire eye with a ring of green where the whites should have been. His hair was the dark green of sea weed, slicked back into spikes, making his sallow skin seem to stand out even more. When he spoke his lips curled back from teeth that tapered into grotesque points.
"I came looking for answers, the truth," he answered, trying not to look at the creature's teeth. They were meant for ripping the flesh from bone and shredding through muscle, and he wasn't interested in receiving a first hand demonstration.
