The Monster
He couldn’t tell you much about where he came from.
That would involve a life he can’t recall, though he tries desperately to.
Raking a lazy paw across the dirt, Uhyre’s claws cut clean and uninterrupted by stones. The cavern he’d wandered into felt well-trod yet abandoned, like a mine of sorts. And that was fine to him. Mines meant gems and crystals most of the time… And that’s what drew him there. The faint calling resonance of a jewel…
He continued on down the black tunnel… No light to guide him. No torch sending flickering shadows to precede him. He didn’t need it. He didn’t have the sight to appreciate it. The dull thumps of his foot-falls sent enough vibration to paint out the image of his immediate surroundings in dull outlines in his mind, aided by the humid and stale smelling air hanging heavily around him the further he ventured. The moisture was even beginning to form tiny drop that covered his leathery hide and kept him cool, which he liked.
A low, rumbling groan emitted from his throat as he tried to gain a clearer image in his mind of the rocky walls around him. The resonating vibration of a jewel still hummed to him, drawing him closer and amplifying just slightly as he drew nearer… But it was closer now.
He needed it.
Weather it was easily placed to pluck from the wall or buried in stone, he would get it.
He wouldn’t leave without it.
The purpose of his hunt was of no consequence to him. If it had ever had a purpose, it was forgotten… He simply felt driven to collect precious stones, gathering them in a horde not unlike a dragon in a storybook. It wasn’t greed, necessarily, but almost an act of desperation. There had even been times when a stone called him while in another’s possession… and if denied, those situations never ended happily for anyone but Uhyre…
But he didn’t mean any harm.
His devotion to this obscure quest was blind and unquestioning.
And so he did harm.
But even now as he clawed at the damp stone walls of the cavern, cutting long gouges into the face and chipping away to where the jewel called from, he felt a faint and pleading memory stir in the back of his mind.
The stones bring me peace…
But how many will make it sustaining?
