Waiting...

The sunrise is kissing my lips when I think I see you.
It's been fourteen years but I can still hear your crystal bell voice whispering love into my soul.
The trains old bones are hissing and groaning like a bitter dragon too ancient to fly.
My heart gallops, twists and hums in anticipation as I see you descend the steps... and falters and cracks as I realize she is not you.
The sun cloaks me with her warmth, a quiet comfort, as the train pulls away from the empty station.
I stand for hours, scrutinizing each departing face with too-wide eyes.
You swore you'd come, so I am not worried when the sun withdraws her embrace to slide down the mountains.
I know there is another train coming and I know you will be on it. I shift the wild flower bouquet into my other hand and hope you won't mind some wrinkled petals.
The air grows colder as I wait, sitting now, and I find myself staring into wilting heads. I realize in this moment that I am utterly, frighteningly lost without you.
The stars, like miniature lanterns, float across the expanding deep.
Suddenly I hear it, faint yet blaring like a siren of hope. I jump to my feet and can't help but grin. Glancing at the ornate clock behind me it solemnly glows 11:25pm.
Last one.
Any minute we will start our life anew. Same love, new beginnings.
Beneath great serpents of smoke the train lurches to a halt and colorless passengers emerge.
I'm holding my breath as I search and examine and dismiss each new face.
She promised me she would be here. She swore to me and I believed her.
The last weary traveler slipped from the belly of the iron beast and I twirled in a slow circle. Maybe I missed her?
S l o w l y ... t u r n i n g ... the bouquet f a l l i n g as the smoke plumes float up to join the tiny lanterns.
With haunted eyes I look back to the train, which is being swallowed by night, cart by cart.
But you swore!
You swore.
I'm on my knees now.
I exhale my soul, deeply, completely, and tilt my head back to watch it join the lunar shepard and it's flock of lost stars.
