(By Khiton)

The robot slowly got to its feet, looking around for the first time. It was large and dog-like in shape but obviously robotic, all silver and obviously mechanical. For the job it was built for, there was no reason for it to look realistic. Security had been built as a robot guard dog: the latest technology in looking after your home and family. He could understand basic, useful, commands such as to chase or stop chasing and his robotic brain could record and remember everyone you considered a friend and everything you wanted to protect. That way, he wouldn't injure anyone without good reason but also wouldn't let a guest walk out of the house carrying your prized possessions. Other than that though, he was designed with a very minimal ability to think because the inventors worried it would just over-complicate things.

Slowly turning his head, Security got a feel of his surroundings, automatically noting the people in the room as those he needed to protect. He could be reprogrammed to add more people to his list or to replace them entirely but, for now, the inventors didn't bother to test whether that feature worked or not, simply wanting to make sure Security actually did his job and guarded those he was meant to. Without a word, they left him in the room alone, moving to a viewing area nearby, one-way glass allowing them to see Security without him being aware they were watching. For a while, Security searched the room for the inventors before giving up and curling up in the corner, the lights in his eyes slowly fading as if he were closing them while he rested. He lay as he was for a good twenty minutes, his tail giving the occasional twitch while he relaxed, before the inventors decided it was time to test his abilities.

As soon as the door began to creek open, Security jumped to his feet and stood in a defensive position while he waited. Another inventor, who Security was yet to see, slowly made his way in the room, first being careful to make as little noise as possible before acting normally, as if he were meant to be there and the robot should recognise him, when he realised he was being watched. Running through the list of people he was meant to protect in a matter of seconds, the robotic dog realised the man was an intruder and moved quickly, pouncing on him to stop him from going any further.

Well he worked, that was a good sign at least. The only problem the scientists could think of at the time was how they would deal with visitors, mainly people like plumbers or electricians who would likely not be going back so Security's owner wouldn't want to put on the system as someone who could be trusted. [...] [malfunction of sorts] [yay story]
