Thunder growled through the deep forest as night fell. A light rain began to patter down on the leaves, dusk closing in faster and faster in the path of the growing storm. Soon all was black and rain poured from the sky in great torrential sheets, lightning flashing and snarling to the earth, briefly illuminating the woods before plunging it back into blackness.

Eyes glinted just above the treetops and a wet flapping could be heard.

Invisible to everything but the lightning, Northbound alighted on the upper branches of a tall pine, weighing down the sopping sticks until he hung lopsidedly over the edge. His empty gaze swept the forest quickly before he turned to clean himself of the fleas that seemingly popped out of nowhere. One in particular began to irritate him with its incessant nibbling and he chased it down.

Finished grooming, the enormous bird dropped off the branch and began flying again, eyes constantly alert for trouble in his woods. Eventually he passed a house in the woods, warm light streaming from the windows. He passed over, unfazed, and continued his patrol. Deep in his breast, in his heart of hearts, he longed for that warmth again. He would never tell them, but he enjoyed listening to them tell their stories around the fire while he roosted broodingly in the darkest corner of the rafters. He knew he was allowed down but never accepted the invitation.

Lightning splashed across the forest again as Northbound landed on another pine. There would be time to warm up later, once he made sure the demons that surrounded his family could not harm them. Beginning at the southernmost point of their land, he worked his way up, keeping close watch on the lands at night when it was too rainy for the others to come outside. No matter what, he had to start south and finish north, pushing the things back from whence they came.
