It was never meant to turn out like this.
First, he lost his brother. There was no convincing Elros to remain immortal--to remain with him--though it had not been for lack of trying. Once his brother had decided, there was no turning back. The choice had been made. His brother would die and leave him alone in this world.
Then, he lost his king. The greatest of the remaining elves of Middle-Earth and his dearest friend, Gil-Galad was gone. His existence was cut short by the decimation wrought by Sauron the Deceiver. There were none who loved his king more than he, and no elf or man suffered greater than he did on that day. He should have seized the Ring and thrown it into the flames himself, but the shock of the battle had overcome him and had become frozen in fear. How he regretted that day. He had failed his king, in more ways than one.
Slowly, and with much time, he healed. And his life was happy, for a while. He fell in love with the daughter of the Lord and Lady of Lothlorien. They were married, and they had three beautiful children. But again, his life began to unravel.
Celebrian was taken by orcs and tortured. They locked her away in a dungeons far from sunlight or fresh air, far from safety and warmth, far from hope. They did unspeakable things to her in the darkness. Their sons found her, slaughtered the beasts that hurt her, and brought her home, but she was already fading. She fell into melancholia, reliving the horrors inflicted upon her even in her waking hours. She no longer glowed with life and love. She was dying. He had to let her go, into the West, so that she could live on. He would not see her until his work in Middle-Earth was done. After she had gone, he began to miss her more and more as the days and years passed; still, he could not go to her.
Now, so close to the end of their time in Middle-Earth, he will lose again. He will lose his daughter.
Arwen is fading. She will stay here with him, and she will die.
Of course, he wanted her to be happy; she was his daughter, his youngest child, and she was going to die. She would never join them in the Grey Havens. Like her ancestor Luthien, she would sacrifice everything for a man she loved, and she would die a mortal death. It was too much to ask of him; he could not give her away.
But it was not his choice to make, and he could not tear her away from her love. When the grey ships finally carried him home, he would lose her.
No one understood grief like Lord Elrond Peredhel. No one ever would.
The time of the Eldar is over.
(Thank you to Lin for allowing me to adopt Peredhel from her!)
