Huh. To be honest, this junkyard is both unexpected and exactly what you expected at the same time. Towers of discarded items surround you, all sorted into groups and categories. Some piles are even sorted by material. Copper pipes over here, aluminum sheets over there, tires of all sizes stacked toward the back. At the end of the dirt path stands a tall tree with an impressively large treehouse on top and what appears to be a shop below. Suddenly you feel something bump into you, not once, but twice. Now a third time.Casting your gaze downward, you notice it is a little robot running into your leg, backing up, and then hitting you again. The robot has a box-shaped metal body, cans with lightbulbs attached for eyes, wheels instead of legs, and prongs for hands. You take a step to the right, and the robot proceeds in the direction it was going. It is carrying a set of wire in one of its prongs, and your gaze follows it as it tosses the wire into a pile with other wire. You look down at the little robot in your arms, noticing it is shaking with nervousness. “Sorry about him. Arthur is programmed to sort, but I haven’t quite figured out how to help him change paths when something unusual is in the way.”Startled, you jump at the voice and turn around to find a short and thin elderly man smiling back at you. The man looks at you with golden eyes, his gray hair standing up in every direction, some even poking out of his ears. His overalls are grease-covered and dingy, and it appears as though he has worn the same pair of boots his entire life. One of his arms is a prosthetic made of metal, goggles sit atop his head, and he is wearing a strange-looking metal backpack of sorts. “Oh uh, he…Arthur is fine. No worries.” You attempt a half-hearted smile as your friend’s comment replays in your mind:“He’s a kooky old fart, very eccentric, but he’s kind. He will help you.” The old man smiles at you with a wide grin that takes up half his face. “Theodore Lewis Wilkinson III at your service, but you can call me Lewy. So, what can I do for you, young one?” Looking down at the little robot in your arms, you say, “I found this guy outside by the dumpster, he is having a hard time moving right. I think he needs help, and a friend said you might have the right parts?” Lewy motions for you to hand him the robot, so you reluctantly pass him over. “There, there little buddy,” he says to the shaking robot. Furrowing his brow, Lewy gingerly moves the robot’s arms and legs and inspects him for a moment. “Nothing appears to be wrong with his legs, it may be a circuit issue.” He pulls a screwdriver out of his pocket and begins fussing with the panel on the back of the robot’s torso. Peering inside, he nods his head and screws the panel back on. “Hold on to me.”Hold onto…? Lewy grabs onto you with one arm, presses a button on a handle he is holding with the other, and the three of you are shot up into the sky in a cloud of dust. Before you realize it, you’re instinctively holding onto the strange man in a panic. It makes sense now. The backpack he’s wearing is a jetpack. A moment later, you land on a plank of wood at the edge of the treehouse. Lewy sets you down and hands the robot back to you. He heads into the treehouse, so you follow.Inside are worktables and what seems like endless cabinets and drawers. Bits and parts are scattered across the tables and floor. You wonder how this man accomplishes anything in this mess, and, glancing at what seems to be multiple unfinished projects, if he accomplishes anything at all. “Now where did I put those…” Lewy mutters to himself as he digs through drawers. “Toby! Where did those circuit boards go?” Who is Toby? Lewy walks over to a pile of metal and gently nudges at a yet another robot with his foot. “Toby! Naptime is over, we’ve got a friend in trouble!”The robot, Toby, awakes with a jump. His blue LED eyes flash a couple times as though blinking. “Trouble?” His high-pitched, robotic voice shakes. “There’s trouble?!”“No trouble, Toby,” Lewy lets out a much-too-loud cackle. “I said we have a friend in trouble. This little guy’s wiring is all out of whack.” As you recover yourself from Lewy’s startling laugh, you think everything is all a little out of whack here. Although, you cannot help but find the man a little charming. You were right. He is definitely kooky. Lewy grins back at you. “Toby here gets bad anxiety and always thinks the world is ending.” Toby stands upright and mutters, “You humans are too unpredictable, the world very well could end at any moment.” Lewy’s eyes suddenly widen, and he exclaims, “Oh well strip my screws, I am so rude! I never even asked our guest’s names!” Jumping slightly, you nervously give him your name. “And, uh, this, well, I am not really sure what his name it.”The robot in your arms glances around and withdraws into you slightly. After a moment he says in a small voice, “BDY5117. That’s my serial number.” Lewy puts his thumb and forefinger to his chin and thinks for a moment before exclaiming, “BDY, huh? Well, when I called you buddy earlier that was just perfect then! How’s about we call you Buddy?”BDY5117 pauses for a moment. When he speaks, all nervousness is gone. “I like it!”Lewy grins again and excitedly shakes each of your hands. “Well, it is my greatest pleasure to meet the both of you! We will find those old circuit boards and get you all patched up, Buddy. In the meantime, you two care to join me for a cup of tea? And oil of course for our metal friends.” Cheers erupt from the cabinets and drawers as more robots pop up out of hiding, each a mix-match of metals and parts and which appear to have various functions. Some have prongs for hands like Arthur, while others have buckets, hammers, or wrenches. Some roll around on wheels, some move on tracks, and others float. Buddy jumps up happily in your hands, and you let out a warm sigh. It is nice to see him all perked up. You suppose a cup of tea wouldn’t hurt, and you can’t help but be inquisitive about kooky Lewy and his “metal friends.” He seems like the type with plenty of stories. “Tea it is, then,” you agree.
