The battlefield is a world of red. Errour lay dying besides his fallen master. When it was time, Lord Death came, for the battlefield is his ministration. Tall and gaunt, Death offered the destrier a deal: his life for the life of his master.
"I've been seeking a steed, and you're strong and fast," Death said; "Serve me, and you shall be freed when your master passes away in fairer fortune."

So with his last breath, Errour gained a new master, knowing the danger of a deal with Death: for everyone knows, if Death taints you too much, then you will belong to Death forever, deal or no.
With Lord Death as his master, Errour's pure white mane and coat darkened to jet black, patch by patch:
The first time Errour carried Death to the door of a sick child, his heart hardened into a rock and his left flank turned dark overnight. The child was too innocent, too young, to leave the world. Yet Errour had a master to obey.
Errour carried Lord Death to separate lovers forever. The sobs of the loved ones tore at Errour, for he too, left behind his beloved master. Errour's legs were tainted black from wading through tears, and he wondered if his master was bereaved at his death.

Death also collected the souls of the violently departed: the murdered, the trampled, the drowned, and the burned. Their eyes widen at the sight of Errour bearing Lord Death, and have no time to prepare nor to accept before they are yanked from life. Errour saw his dying master in their faces and the darkness crept up Errour's white flowing manes.
Yet Death's trap did not close on Errour. As the destrier gazed upon the life he bought for his old master, he hoped. He saw his master recover from the battle, return home, marry his waiting lover, and start a family. He watched his master laugh, love, and live. And so, one single streak of pure white remained on Errour's jet black mane. No matter how hard Lord Death tried, he could not taint Errour's love for his old master.
Errour served Lord Death day after day. A deal is a deal, and so he lived and dreamed of the day when he would be free.
