The butler wakes him up, because his parents are at work. The chef packs him a lunch, because his parents are at work. The chauffeur drives him to daycare, because his parents are at work.

One of the daycare employees meets him at the front door and signs him in before passing him off to one of her colleagues. They go through the day's scheduled activities: some art, some music, some reading, lunch time. A nap, some games with the other children, a snack. And finally, it's the best part of the day, when they're allowed to play however they want.

He heads straight for the sandbox, as usual. There aren't that many other kids at this daycare -- it's "exclusive", as his father said the one day he drove his son in himself, months ago -- but there's still competition for the best toys. Most of them have given up on the sandbox by now; they know he'll just take it over anyway.

Once he's settled in the sand, he begins to greet his subjects. First, his knights, Sir Shovel and Sir Sifter; then his other nobles, Lady Dinosaur Mold and her husband, Lord Sandcastle Pail; and the rest of his people, whom he has to build from the sand each time. He shapes each citizen with as much care as his small clumsy hands can manage, and he builds them each a home with the help of his nobles. It's a beautiful city, once he's done, full of happy families where nobody needs to be sent to daycare. Lady Dinosaur Mold and Lord Sandcastle Pail are the exception: while they love each other very much, they don't have any children of their own, because they know they're too busy helping the King to raise them.

A couple of the homes are destroyed when Brian loses control of the ball he's playing with nearby, so he has to rally his troops and rebuild so that none of his people will be cold or lonely. (He has to take a time-out when he and Sir Shovel punish Brian for his crime, but the sandbox is untouched when he returns, so it's all right.)

When the teachers say that it's time to clean up because their parents are coming to pick them up, he carefully stows away the lords and ladies in their plastic case and rakes out the sand so it's nice and flat and ready for tomorrow.

The chauffeur picks him up, because his parents are still at work.

"How good and thoughtful he is; the world seems full of good men - even if there are monsters in it."
