Warning! Still needs a lot of proofreading. :)

When Lila was very little she had a terrible fear of the dark, she would not go to bed unless her grandmother left the door cracked open or if she rocked her to sleep. Her grandmother tried everything to get her to sleep without the door open. She did not want to buy a night light because she was sure Lila would burn herself on the bulb. So Lila’s grandmother improvised and bought her a glow worm. The glow worm was an instant success, Lila would fall asleep watching the glow worm twinkle in the night. Lila became very attached to her glow worm, and started to drag it around with her everywhere she went. She affectionately named him Glowy and demanded her family refer to him as such.As Lila got older her fear for the dark was not much different than when she was little, she was still very attached to Glowy and kept him on her bed.

When Lila turned ten her grandmother decided it was time for her to let go of her glow worm, she was now old enough for a night light. Her grandmother knew it would be hard to take it from her, so while she was at school she quietly took it out of her room and stored it in a box in the attic. When Lila came home that afternoon she saw that Glowy was gone. She cried then ran and asked her grandmother where he was. As her grandmother watched the tears poor down Lila’s face, she gently placed her hand on her shoulder, sighed and said,

“It will be OK my love, I feel you are a big girl now and no longer need Glowy.”

Lila screamed in horror as the tears rippled down her face.

“I hate you!!” she yelled to her grandmother, while running out of the kitchen. She slammed her bedroom door and crashed onto her bed face first to the pillow. She cried so hard her tears put her to sleep.

Even though it was hard, eventually Lila got used to not having Glowy. It was not long before she became a teenager and started having other interests, such as boys. Of course deep down inside she never really forgot about Glowy, and always wondered what her grandmother did with him.

As time flew by and Lila got older, she eventually went to college and also got married.

When Lila had just turned thirty years old her grandmother suddenly passed away. It was the hardest thing she had ever been through. A few weeks after her grandmother’s funeral, Lila found herself sitting in the attic of the house she grew up in. She quietly looked through all the boxes to see if she wanted to keep anything of her grandmothers. Slowly she picked through all of the boxes until she saw a really dusty box in the far right corner that looked like it had been there for some time.Lila crept over the small sized box, picked it up then tried to blow some of the of dust off. Carefully she opened it up and right before her eyes laid Glowy.. a tear rolled gently down her cheek. She rubbed some dirt off of him and held him close to her heart as she wept of her grandmothers passing. Suddenly Glowy lit up and it created memories that sped through her head like a high-speed train passing by. She felt bad for telling her grandmother she hated her over something so trivial as a toy. As she sat thinking some more she noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of the box Glowy was in. She unwrapped it an saw a note written by her grandmother, it said:

“To my dearest granddaughter Lila:
I know I broke your heart when I took Glowy away, please forgive me I am really very sorry. Hardships in life hurt but make us stronger and loosing Glowy was no exception. I am putting this note in here Lila, because someday you will find it and look back at what happened think about how it made you a stronger person. I did this because I love you Lila.
Love Gran Gran”

Lila, with tears still falling, smiled and folded the paper up, then put it back in the box. She sat and stared at Glowy for quite some time. Then she suddenly and gently placed Glowy back into the box, then sealed the box back up. At that point her feeling sadness went away as she thought about how loosing Glowy had made her a stronger person. Lila stood and tucked the box under her arm as she stepped out of the attic. While approaching the attic doorway she looked to the end of the stairs and saw her young frowning daughter.

“Mommy why were you up there? It is dark and scary Mommy and I didn’t want to go up there!”

Lila smiled as she went down the stairs, she then picked her up and hugged her tight.

“Melody” she said “I have something for you in this box.”

Melody’s face lit up. “Oh Mommy for me, what is it!?”

“It’s a friend I had when I was your age.”

“That was a long, long time ago wasn’t it Mommy?”

Lila chuckled, “Yes it was.”

Lila set Melody down on the floor, knelt down and handed her the box. “Go ahead baby, open it”. Melody quickly opened it and saw Glowy in the box. She squeezed him and he lit up.

“Mommy! I love him! And he’s all mine?” she asked inquisitively.

Lila smiled, kissed her on the forehead and said “Yes, baby he’s all yours.”

“What’s his name Mommy!?”

“That’s up to you baby.”

Melody stood and stared at him, “Mommy, his name is Glowy.” She then ran down the hall holding him tightly as Lila watched her disappear into the other room…
