I'm the childhood friend of Rand al'Thor, Egwene al'Vere, Perrin Aybarra and Nynaeve al'Meara. I just found out my presence (and that of my friends) can change the fabric of reality and shape it to my will but I'm yet to see how true that bloody is. Sometimes I'm extremely lucky, so I spend most of my time chasing women and gambling but don't ask me how but I find myself now married to the Daughter of the Nine Moons (ruling monarch of the Seanchan, next in line to become Empress). After falling through a doorway and meeting the cruel Aelfinn, I bear a hanging scar and wear a special Foxhead medallion. It is the only known artifact that can severely damage a Gray Man so it will NEVER leave my possession under ANY circumstances. When the dice started spinning loudly in my head I wished it would stop. Now I wish it was still going - that I can just return to Emonds Field and live out my days fat, drunk and happy. Yeah. Be careful what you wish for.
We've all grown up with the stories (and in the case of men; Nightmares!) of those red witches of the Aes Sedai hunting down men who they even suspect can channel but count me out of that insanity thank you very much. As long as I have some ale in one hand, my dice in the other and a warm body on my knee then that's all I need. I should have known better though - happiness isn't for the likes of me. Nope.
Growing up in Emonds Field of the Two Rivers, I should have realised just how good I had it. I might have had to fight for every stick of bread or beer in my belly but I knew I could always count on my two best friends Rand and Perrin. Those meddling women who run this town are lead by Wisdom Nynaeve. She might be young to be a Wisdom but I wouldn't want to be the person who tries telling her that!
Beltine is the happiest day of the year (especially for us men) - we can drink our fill and dice until our wrists fall off but the night before, one of those Aes Sedai and her creepy Warder arrived and it look like they wanted to stay. I know I wasn't the only one thinking what on earth could the White Tower want with our sleepy little village? I didn't have much time to ponder the motivations of the high and mighty - my parents, full of drink, were at it again so I had to make sure my sisters were ok. It was pointless taking sides with them - they were no longer my priority.
The Peddler Padan Fain was my favourite visitor all year - it didn't matter if the goods I traded couldn't exactly be traded here in town, I could count on him to get lanterns at least for my little sisters. I wish my luck weren't so hit and miss but it wasn't for lack of trying. Wherever I went, my trusty dice cup was with me, just in case! While I lead my sisters to the water's edge to set their memorial lanterns adrift to guide the souls of our departed ones' back to us, I keep catching glimpses of the Aes Sedai and her shadow - why are they still here?
Before the dancing and celebrating could really take shape, visions from our worst nightmares came howling towards us, hacking and chopping at anything that moved but all I could think of was the girls! My worthless, cowardly parents refused to help but I didn't care how many bodies of people I've known my entire lives were in front of me, I was finding my sisters and keeping them safe! Thank the gods! I hug them tightly and order them to stay hidden until I come back to get them.
In the aftermath of the attack, I remember rocks flying in every direction and my favourite place The Tavern is a sorry pile of rubble. I know the Aes Sedai had something to do with it in order to save us so I can't be too ungrateful but I still don't fully trust her. The Aes Sedai calls herself Moiraine and informs us she is here specifically for us five - Rand, Perrin, Egwene, Nynaeve and myself. Wait, what??? What's t'averen and why so many of us in the same place? Whatever - in order to protect our remaining family and friends, we have to leave as the Trolloc attack was sent to kill us and they don't care how many towns people they kill to get to us.
We keep running for what feels like forever but we hear them in the distance day and night. Finally we reach Tarrin Ferry - everyone knows Trollocs wont cross deep water so there's hope for a respite soon. We no sooner reach the other side of the river when Moiraine decides to sink the ferry but the poor terrified Ferry man is desperate to cross back and save his family. We all understand that the man's family is already gone and we can't let the trollocs use the ferry but watching him go down with the ferry - is that what them Aes Sedai witches call collateral damage and when will WE share the same fate?
After an uneasy sleep, we discover we four have shared the same dream featuring this dark figure with embers for eyes - Moiraine thinks it's the Dark One trying to influence us but we've had enough and Rand explodes at the blue witch - hell I want to be next in line but there's no time. We encounter a weird group of Warriors calling themselves White Cloaks - I don't know who they are but they make me more uneasy than Moiraine so we let her take the lead with them. Nothing to see here folks - I'm just a dumb farm boy on his first venture. I start to long for a taste of home so I sing one of my favourite songs and the boys join in. Moiraine informs us we are actually singing the song of our ancestors - that we were once part of the legendary Kingdom of Manethren. Fun fact.
We awaken suddenly to the sound of the Trollocs closer on our heels than before - how the hell did they get so close? Moiraine leads us to the closest place she can think of but none of us want to go anywhere near the place. What choice do we have? The Trollocs wont follow us in here so that has to count for something, right? She calls the place Shadar Logoth and cautions us to touch nothing or eat anything from this cursed place. All I care about is finding a place to sleep somewhat undisturbed.
In the dead of night, I feel something calling to me and I can't resist - is it treasure of old? The whispers lead to me to a corner with an ornate box poking out from under some rags. It contains the most beautiful dagger I've ever seen. I've never wanted anything so much in my life and now it's all mine! A shadow on the ground appears to be moving - it's following me! I must warn the others fast before it reaches them too but in the chaos, we are all separated, running for our lives - not even the horses are safe! Rand and I try our hardest to escape the city walls and barely manage. We wonder if the others got away and when we will see each other again. Our only move is to keep going until we reach our destination, Tar Valon.
It feels like forever before we find any place to rest our weary feet. We pass a body in a cage full of spears - I wonder what the poor bastard did to deserve that but he sure has a nice gemstone tucked away there - best be careful. We reach the inn and realise we might have to choose between food or a place to sleep but Rand volunteers us as bar slaves! I'm too tired and sore to chop wood dammit! The Innkeeper is a bit of all right so I offer to help her inside. Rand can break his back out there - I've had enough. She puts me to work serving drinks and the upside is I occasionally get tips.
I know I should be grateful but all I can think about is that poor dead body in that metal cage. There's a Gleeman here and he's quite good. Sombre but good. The gleeman introduces himself as Thom Merrilyn and told me that the guy in the cage was called an Aeilman who's only crime was being different. As soon as the Inkeeper lets me go, I head straight for the gem - I mean he's not going to need it is he so where's the harm in just taking a little trinket? Before I can act, Thom cautions me - what will the townsfolk do if they catch a thief who loots dead bodies? The least we can do is bury him. I think Thom senses my desperation as well so we both agree and I get my bauble. I don't know why but I think Thom senses something good in me.
I see Rand come barreling through the door to our beds with the Inkeeper fast behind him with Rand's sword so I quickly join him to help find somewhere to hide or escape but she is relentless! We face her weapons drawn and discover the Inkeeper likes the sound of her own voice and is a dark friend tasked with delivering us to her Dark Master. She knows one of us could be the bloody Dragon Reborn! Does everyone in this cursed place know who we are? Before one of us can react, a throwing knife appears in her throat with Thom the Gleeman close behind. I don't know about Rand but I'm ready to leave this bloody place and anyone who can aim a throwing knife like that can travel with us!
I pride myself on knowing my horseflesh but my horse acts like it's barely broken. Trust me to get the most cantankerous beast! I can't help but wonder who else could be a dark friend ready to attack at a moments notice? I need to keep my guard up around everyone including Thom. We hear stories that the real Dragon Reborn has been caught so does this mean everyone will leave us alone and we get to go home soon? Nah. My luck's nowhere near that good.
Why is my horse afraid of it's own shadow dammit? We see a farm house in the distance so I creep forward but I catch a glimpse of longbows pointed right at us from several angles. I guess noone's sneaking up on this farmer or his family! Again Rand offers our services as stable hands this time but Thom begs off to practise singing for the family instead. Well if Thom can slack off then so can I. I really don't feel good though so I try to take a drink from the horse trough but black stuff comes pouring out my mouth. I encounter the farmer's youngest daughter - she reminds me of my sisters complete with straw dolly. I don't like the way Thom looks at me now. Doesn't he have anything better to do?
Rand and I share another dream featuring the Dark One and realise we are in danger so we run to the Farm House. Death has followed us there. I feel the need to pull out my dagger and I immediately know exactly where the Eyeless Fade is but it escapes. I see the body of the young girl as we escape - was that me or the fade? The anger is so strong I can almost taste it! Rand tries telling me it was the fade but I don't know if I can trust myself.
As we reach the streets of Tar Valon I wonder why I never noticed how bloody annoying kids are - if one more barrels into me I might bite their fool head off! Rand is getting more sanctimonious by the minute. I don't need a damn wet nurse! People everywhere. Loud. Too many. Just leave me the hell alone! I don't know why I'm surprised that a room for the night costs five times what it costs at home but I am. Rand needs to leave me the hell alone so I can sleep! All I need is my dagger and sleep, not food. Not company. Not even Nynaeve who normally makes everything feel better. As we wait for our bed we see the Aes Sedai witches parade the so called false Dragon Reborn through the streets. He laughs and yells at us, something about the real Dragon. Does everyone know it could be one of us? Rand and I vow to end the other if it turns out one of us is the Dragon Reborn.
I'm so damn tired and angry all the time. I can hear Rand talking outside. I bet he's telling everyone I'm the Dragon Reborn. They keep talking about me like I'm not there but I no longer care. All I want is my dagger and sleep. All I feel now is anger and pain. That blue witch wants to kill me or take away my dagger but it's mine! I feel waves of pain but I also see light for the first time in what feels like forever! It's like a fog has been lifted but I know what has been taken. Moiraine says I was feeding off the dagger almost as much as it was feeding off me and she only just got to me in time. I feel relieved but a part of me longs for what is gone.
Rand and I try to enjoy a few drinks but before we could finish more than a couple of pints, Moiraine's Warder Lan grabs us and sends us out of town to meet up with Egwene, Nynaeve and Perrin. Before we can do more than celebrate our reunion for a few minutes, Moiraine opens a dark dark portal to use the Ways but I want nothing to do with that kind of darkness so soon. I wont get lost in the dark after I just found the light again dammit! I know my friends want me to join them but I would rather abandon my friends than go dark again. I don't want to risk hurting anyone else. I'm sorry. It's time this bloody t'averen stuff works for me - I'm returning to Shadar Logoth. I'm not strong enough yet but I will be.
