The flashlight stuttered in the dark. Brigitte gave it a sharp thump with her paw hoping that it might help bring it back to life, but it only blinked a few more times before dwindling out. The cave lapsed into darkness around her.

Bloody things never work when you need them..., she thought to herself. She pulled off her large rucksack and dug around until she found the torch she had brought. She lit it and did a quick check of her map. Should be just around the corner here. I sure hope so, this has been enough of a disaster already. The expedition certainly hadn’t gone as she had planned. When she had first found the map, it had looked like a simple in, out and profit. Little had she known the path would have been filled with traps and, well, ‘strange occurrences’ that had scared away even her bravest companion. There’s also the footsteps, piped in her subconscious helpfully, but she shoved that thought to the back of her mind.

The light cast from the torch cast eerie shadows on the wall. They weren’t normal shadows, they hadn’t been since she had entered the cave all those days ago. These were alive. They were watching, and, sometimes they would speak to her. Always the same words.

You must leave! Run! It comes!

Always followed by the footsteps. So far, she’d managed to hide in corners and crevices until it had past. Maybe not the bravest move, but hey, no one was around to see it.

Her musings occupied her thoughts until she came upon an archway. Just beyond lay a large cavern that glittered in the torch light. I made it! Just imagine the looks on their faces when they see this! Treasures were heaped throughout the cavern, just waiting to be collected. Brigitte picked a pile at random and began shovelling it into her bag.

Why now!? Why do these things always have the worst timing? Sighing to herself, she doused her light, flung her goody bag over her shoulder and quickly found a convenient nook to hide herself in. She rooted around in her rucksack once more, smiling as her paws found what they were looking for.

A dark shadow entered the cavern. In the dark, she couldn’t make out many details. It was a large, shadowed creature with devilish looking horns and awful looking claws. Ready to eat up anyone foolish enough to come after it’s bloody treasure, of course. As the creature snuffled around, trying to find the intruder she slowly, slowly began to shift behind it towards the exit. After an eternity, she was back at the arch. “Hey bozo!” she cried, launching a stick of dynamite into the air. “Catch!”

She ran. She didn’t stop when she heard the giant boom and she didn’t stop as the walls seemed to crash in around her. She ran for what seemed like forever until she finally saw sunlight. Panting, she made her way out of the cave and collapsed. Lying on the ground, she grinned and pulled out her greatest prize from the cavern.
