"Hearts will never be practical until they are made unbreakable."

My name is Nick Chopper, and this is the story of how I became
a rusted piece of metal and cut down trees for a living.

My fathers before me have always cut down trees. As a child I was told how it would be passed on to me one day and that I would make a good income for the rest of my life here in Oz. Before my father had passed, he had also blessed me with the one axe he always used. I made an effort to cut down every tree through the pouring down rain, to the heat as thick as sardines packed in a can, and through the snowfall to make my father proud that he passed this job down to me.

Little did I know that one day I would be punished for using the one thing that provided me with a shelter and food. The Wicked Witch of the East enchanted my axe with much cruel intentions so that I could never have feelings for the one I truly loved. My poor, sweet Nimmie. If she had known how much I loved her, I would have given her the world.

Each day I worked harder and harder, but the spell had taken over and chopped off my limbs one by one. The tin I had used for each arm and leg—and eventually my neck and head—had tremendously hurt. I felt so bad for Nimmie having to be a servant to that wretched witch. Her love for me was still there as she knew that my enchanted axe was painfully taking my life away. Each day I became a tin man and had eventually lost my love for Nimmie—as I truly had no heart or love to give. And some days I blame my so-called friend, Ku-Klip, for not ever replacing my heart.

My life eventually became a blur as I stood in the rain for years. Rusted up with no thoughts, no one to love, and no heart to beat. Then one day, my life had changed when Dorothy Gale came and oiled up my rusted limbs. It felt amazing to move for the first time in who knows how long, but I was super thankful that Miss Gale had come along in one of the many forests in Oz to save me.

It was then that I befriended Dorothy and the Scarecrow, and she told me how they were on their way to the Emerald City. Throughout the journey we met the Lion and all befriended him as well. I told Dorothy that I could prove useful on this journey as we passed through this Winkle Country. I built wooden rafts and bridges along the way. Unfortunately, I also killed the animals who threatened my friends. These animals were ruthless and had thrown me to numerous heights! I crashed down and been very badly bent out of shape. I told my friends to continue along without me to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. They were victorious, and the gracious people of Winkle Country had fixed, polished, and oiled my rusted and bent tin.

We finally progressed on the path towards the Emerald City and not have to worry about evil coming near since the Wicked Witch of the West was dead. On the way we all talked about the Great Oz and his foretold powers. Little did my friends and I know, this so-called "Great Wizard of Oz" was a huge fake humbug. He granted each of us with our wish and my velvet heart was once again filled with sawdust—making me feel whole again. With or without a heart, I was still the same compassionate and emotional Nick that I had always been.

As my friends and I all departed back to our homes, I felt ill and upset from all the insects I crushed along the way. For any other person or living thing that has a heart would not care as much as I do. In our short journey together, Dorothy could see that I had grown to love such things with this little velvet heart of mine. She was upset to leave back to Kansas, but told me how I should return to the Winkle Country for they were so hospitable to me and I would do great there because I had learned to care.

Dorothy's advice had been floating around my brainless tin head, and I returned to the Winkle Country and asked to be their Emperor. The Winkletons accepted me greatly and we all built a palace all out of tin. Even the flowers were tin! This magical country has kept me caring and loving things (as I should've always had). Without a doubt, I'd be nowhere without my friends and the Winkle Country.
