Meryl often thought that she must know more about diamonds than almost anyone. After all, they grew from her spines, they were a part of her. She could feel them growing ever so slowly. As they grew, she would cut and polish them, often spending hours of her day doing so. Each one was a work of art once finished and harvested, its beauty shining from all facets.

Sadly, her diamonds were the exact sort of thing that poachers tended to hunt for. If she were ever captured, she would be locked in a cage for the rest of her life, seeing the outside world only when it was time to retrieve a new batch of crystals. Even worse, they may kill her on the spot if they were in a hurry. She’d seen many of her family members hunted down in such a fashion.

Sometimes she thought she was a coward for how she'd hidden away during that fateful night so long ago. As her fellows had been surrounded, murdered and chopped up, she'd hidden behind a stone outcrop. She hadn’t been able to watch, but she could hear their screams from the darkness. The killers had come near to her several times, but, as she'd held her breath, not daring to move, they had just missed her each time.

As night fell and the poachers had left, she’d finally summoned up the courage to go examine the carnage. She often wished she’d run then and not looked. Body parts were strewn everywhere, and every single diamond spike had been sawed off. She was the only survivor from her family, and since their diamond spikes were genetic, she was probably the last diamond donadak to exist on Subeta.

She often wondered if perhaps someday the poachers would come back to finish the job. She hoped that they would, because she was no longer the cowardly donadak who had hidden behind a rock all that time ago. This time, she was ready for them.
