The heir to the throne of a small kingdom, who as a small child is the subject of a curse which transforms him into a bird (of prey?). Hiding the truth from the outside world, the king and queen keep the bird in a cage in their room and invent excuses for their son's failure to appear in public. Memories of its humanity fade gradually and eventually the bird breaks free; and after years of hunting, unable to continue the lies the king and queen are forced to declare their son dead. The bird meanwhile spends the next twenty or so years living wild in deep forest on the borders of the kingdom, mistrusted and avoided by other creatures due to its unnaturally long youth and the very rare times when it will tumble suddenly to the ground and wake bruised and bewildered as a gaunt, bony human male with long, pale limbs and wild, dark hair.
