Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

Back back back when there was no fire the people would talk about the sun and they would talk about the darkness and the darkness contained teeth, and pain, and blood, and that darkness was the Beast. The Beast is in every myth and every folktale. He is the Serpent in the garden of Eden and he is Anansi and he is Crow and Jackal and Coyote and Kokopelli. The Beast is the knife in a stranger's hand and he is the dark blip on your X-ray.
If you have ever told a story you have given the Beast power. He eats the emotions of humans and lives inside of them, pokes like a blade through people who are scared or sad or angry. The Beast makes deals with such people, exchanges power and money and fame for their mortal souls.
He is a trickster, and such things must be feared. Evil is simple, but a trickster is not evil. A trickster is a wildcard.
