Nekomata (Translation: Forked Cat) are a type of Japanese spirit which begin life as normal felines, but as they grow older they gain their supernatural powers, such as shapeshifting, necromancy, and control over fire. Most cats who gain powers become Bakleneko (Translation: Monster Cat/Ghost Cat) Only the oldest and most intelligent cats become Nekomata, identified by the way their tail splits down the middle to form two identical tails when they transform. They are known to be seen walking on their hind legs and speaking the human language. Nekomata can grow to be monstrous in size, and are malicious in nature, holding all humans in contempt. They have even been known to enslave, blackmail, or simply eat humans.
