Melipona was one of two prospective heirs to Queen Bea's throne. Having recently come of age, she, along with her young ward, Lady Potnia, was cast out for the traditional Year of Trials. During this time she should strive to prove herself a worthy ruler. However, there's one teeny, tiny hitch...

...she's not sure she wants to. She loves the hive, and as a member of the highest caste, she should get an important position in court, but she's disinterested in ruling. Her passion lies with exploration, and she dreams of one day having a role which allows her to travel the world and serve the hive at the same time.

Unfortunately, during her travels she made the acquaintance of the sea witch, Merana. Although her readings had warned her about the dangers Merana posed, the witch's powerful personality drew in the Princess, and they soon became friends. Tempted by the promise of being introduced to a whole new world, Melipona drank a potion offered to her by Merana, only to find her body warping as she was bound to the Omen Islands. Now, instead of traveling Subeta, she keeps Merana company, mourning her foolishness. She was able to send Potnia back to the hive, but she'll never see her family again, as bumbi now avoid the Omen Islands.
