Der letzte Mann ist aufgewacht
Ein Feuersturm fällt aus dem Tag
Das Boot schraubt sich so tief hinab
On March 17th in 1941 the Germans lost one of their most successful submarine boats southeast of Iceland. That night forty crewmen, including the captain, were rescued, three found their death - one of them during the attack of British destroyers, another one while scuttling the boat. Regarding the death of the third victim, twenty-three year old radioman Ludwig Schneider, there were contradictory statements afterwards. Some said he was severely injured during the attack and bled to death within minutes, others claimed he left the boat together with the rest of the crew but then drowned short after. Ludwig himself, or more precisely that what was left of him, knew better and this circumstance should later cost the lives of many men...but let's start at the beginning.
The issues started right on his first day on board of U-99. Ludwig replaced the boats' former radioman who tragically died during a shore leave and who obviously wasn't just a colleague but more like a mascot for everyone. Due to the incredible popularity of his predecessor his comrades bluntly showed Ludwig that he was tolerated but for sure not wanted, something that wasn't easy to cope with in the narrowness of a submarine boat. Only one man of the regular crew, chief engineer Joachim Schröder, treated him with respect but this circumstance didn't make it easier at all for the "freshman" to be accepted. The reason for it was that Joachim was said to be a grumpy recluse who never talked to anyone unless it was about work. Everyone on board had tried to approach him at least once but every single attempt had failed miserably. Now seeing how this otherwise withdrawn guy seemed to show serious interest in Ludwig, even going so far as to ask the outcast radioman about his private life and to share his beloved cigarettes with him, was something that brought the others to make the strangest assumptions leading up to the idea that the two men would be in love with each other.
When they got confronted openly with this delicate rumor Ludwig immediately tried to defend himself but Joachim slapped him on the shoulder and ordered him to sit down with a short gesture. The engineer then just looked at the other crewmen for a while with his typical, kinda arrogant smile. "Aw, are we jealous?" was all that he said before he turned around. In a nearly caressing manner he ruffled through Ludwig's hair while winking at him, then he just went back to work, leaving behind a totally startled radioman and a remaining crew that now was sure to have hit home with their remark. The whole rest of the day Ludwig couldn't get the incident out of his head and the thoughts even followed him to bed later in the evening. Why on earth did Joachim say that? Was it just another joke or was there more behind it? Before he fell asleep he decided that he would ask the other one about that as soon as possible and with this intent he finally dozed off...
Not even two hours later his awakening was a rude one. U-99 had been traced and was now attacked by British warships. After a few fruitless attempts to fight back the captain ordered to submerge but short after it became apparent that the boat had been damaged too much for that and so all that could be done was to emerge again and to leave the boat as quickly as possible. Ludwig was one of the last men to leave but close to the exit he suddenly felt an excruciating pain in his back, a pain that sent him down to his knees immediately and that nearly let him faint. With his hand he touched the spot where the pain did come from only to feel two things - blood and a jackknife! The radioman called for help but the others had already saved themselves - now he was all alone on that doomed submarine boat. In his head there was no room for logical thinking anymore, everything was just filled with hopelessness, fear, anger and the wish for a quick ending.
"What the hell are you doing here?" A voice called Ludwig back into reality, a voice that he knew too well and that filled his heart with hope again - Joachim's voice. The chief engineer had been send down again to scuttle the boat but when he saw his comrade lying on the floor in his own blood he forgot this order immediately. Instead he began to check Ludwig's wound even though he caused the other one even more pain with it. "Doesn't look good!" he said and it was obvious that he was worried. "We have to get out of here, let's hope the Brits have a good doctor on board." In this very moment a jolt went through the boat and the stern side began to go down. "Shit, that damn thing is sinking, exactly what we needed! Get up now - it's not the right time for playing the pussy, Mister Schneider!" Joachim slapped Ludwig, who already was more unconscious than anything, in the face and tried his hardest to get him on his feet again but soon it was clear that it wouldn't work, the radioman had lost too much blood.
"Go alone, just leave me here and tell my parents that I am sorry, will you?" It was not more than a whisper but in Ludwig's eyes, that looked clear again in this moment, there was so much pleading that Joachim for a few seconds was willed to grant him this wish. Then however he insistently shook his head and smiled. "If you think that I let you die alone here like a fuckin' dog you are very much mistaken, my friend. We either both leave or we both die, period." Again the boat was trembling. Ludwig opened his mouth to protest but Joachim gently closed it again. "It's okay, my pretty one, it's okay...they will pay for it, I promise." These were the last words that were spoken on the doomed U-99 and when the boat finally gave itself up to the sea it sank with two men in its broken body that were holding each other tight.
From this day on more and more German submarine boats were hunted down and incapacitated. Strangely enough one story told by survivors could be heard more than once and independently of each other, albeit never in public as it just sounded too unnatural. It was the story of two mysterious men that were seen on the submarine boats short before the end. These men were pale, with dark circles around their eyes and they wore the typical uniforms of German submarine officers. The most disturbing thing about them were their faces though, so full of hate and spite that it made them appear like harbingers of the upcoming catastrophe...
Der letzte Kurs führt aus dem Tag
Die Bolzen schlagen durch die Nacht
Der Atem stockt im Fluch der Zeit
Die kalte See so tief und weit
Keine Wege die mich führen
Kein Kreuz wird meines sein
Keine Sonne wird sich zeigen
Kein Licht, das mir erscheint
Keine Namen, wie vergessen
Kein Weg kann weiter sein
Keine Helden werden siegen
Abwärts bis zum letzten Mann - So tief!
