Half-blood. That is what most people who saw him thought. Indeed, he was half human, half yokai. Though born from beautiful love, many saw him as their hate materialized.
As a young child, he lived in peace with his mother and father in a friendly, tolerant village. The peace was not fated to last, as Seth's tirade of hate ransacked the village, destroying anything and anyone they came upon. Renji's mother urged him to find a safe spot in the nearby forest while she stayed with his father, who tried to fight the invaders. After waiting in the forest for what seemed like hours, he made his way back to the village. Nothing but the sound of crackling wood from the dying fires could be heard. Bodies were everywhere, so much blood... Through his tears, he saw the two who meant everything to him lying lifeless in a pool of blood. Not knowing what to do, he gathered a few surviving things from his home and heeded his mother's advice: if anything were to happen, head to her parents' home.
The family was noble and well-respected one, living in luxury. They never got over their only daughter's decision to run off with a yokai. Because of that, they treated Renji very coldly, keeping him out of sight. Only out of responsibility did they house him. His grandfather would not even teach him the art of the sword, saying he was beneath it. Unbeknownst to his grandfather, he would often spy on the classes he taught, picking up many techniques.
