Insects are creatures of great efficiency. Usually, one queen is in charge of a hive, soldiers and workers tending to her and ensuring the survival of the colony. Even lone insects, however, pride themselves with efficiency. Where little else is available, some beetles have evolved to thrive in the waste of other, larger animals.
Insects can, indeed, devour just about anything organic.
Some butterflies obtain nutrients not only from flowers, but also from carrion. Some bees drink the tears and sweat of larger animals and many parasitic insects survive on blood. Efficient, streamlined, emotionless and eternally hungry. It comes as no surprise that the spirit of famine chose them to represent and embody her.
The Hive herself is light, but possesses admirable strength - easily being able to lift a grown man into the air and fly away with him, often dropping the unfortunate soul from great height much to her amusement. Humans are flawed, inefficient, far too easily swayed by their emotions. Yet, they are much like ants and bees - cogs in an enormous machine, each keeping their society alive in some way or another.
In addition to strength, she has a rather unique ability to command entire swarms of insects ranging from locusts to hornets, and those who have had dealings with her could have sworn that she was a living hive herself.
