Marcus was born as a clansman of the Cherusci, a Germanic tribe native to parts of the northern Rhine valley and the plains and forests of northwestern Germany. Not much about him is known from that time since he forgot most things, what he still was able remember though was the voice of his mother, who loved to sing, that he often went fishing with his father and that they owned a big gray dog that always was at his side. At the age of six he came as a voluntary given "hostage" to Rome where he was secretly adopted by a wealthy family that used him as a nearly perfect replacement for their son who died in a bathing accident shortly before. From this time on Marcus felt embarrassed of his Germanic origin, believing that his parents disliked him and that they gave him away to get rid of an unwanted burden. With that in mind he never made any effort to find out what happened to his family and when he, finally and several years later, realized that he was wrong with his assumption and that his parents most probably only sent him to Rome to grant him a better life it was already to late for questions or investigations.
His new parents made sure that he was just as well-educated as a normal Roman boy would be and they also officially added him to their family by giving him the name of their original son, Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus. His actual birth name he kept as a secret from this day on because he, already deeply influenced by the few years he spent in the Roman Empire, wanted to be a "true Roman" what later also made him enter the military. Thanks to his tactical skills, his courage and his foresight he quickly gained trust and reputation among his superiors and so he climbed up the career ladder in no time.
The same luck he also had in his private life. For a while, and before he even started his military career, he was married with a Roman woman but she died in childbed only a few months after the marriage. Now one could ask why this was lucky for him - well, he never loved his wife, in fact he actually strongly despised her for her arrogance and greed and he had only married her because it had been his fathers' last will. Because of this he felt nothing but relief when he was informed about her sudden death. Since that day he preferred to stay what people call a single today, his career always came first for him and flirt attempts he usually overlooked even if he theoretically would have been able to marry up by starting a relationship with the woman showing interest in him.
In 33 he met Caligula, who later became the third Roman Emperor, for the first time. The two men got along very well, according to some people especially because of similarities between Marcus and Caligula's father Germanicus who died in the year 19. When Caligula ascended the throne in 37 he immediately made Marcus one of his Praetorian prefects. This act brought them even more together and Caligula was barely seen without his most trusted friend who even told him about his biggest secret, namely that he wasn't a true Roman but of Germanic origin. Despite his illness turned the emperor more and more into an unpredictable monster Marcus never got harmed for anything he did or said but was treated with respect and showered in gifts; one day he even received some highly expensive gladiators from Thrace that then had to fight solely by his rules. He also never had to participate in all the cruel games that Caligula usually loved to play with his subordinates, the only thing he had to do was to stand there and to watch the whole scene. In return Marcus showed absolute loyalty towards his emperor, not caring about the other one's inhuman behavior. Of course he was totally aware of Caligula's deeds, he witnessed them often enough and even committed crimes himself on the emperor's behalf, but he just couldn't hate this man who had become the most important person in his life and who still treated him like a friend. While everyone else around him lost fate in Caligula and his mental condition Marcus more than once stated that he'd gladly sacrifice his own life for his emperor and saying something against him while his prefect was within hearing probably was the most stupid idea a detractor could ever have. Some people claimed that there was more between them than just friendship and none of the two men ever tried to do anything against this rumor what of course was seen as a confirmation.
Unfortunately, when Caligula was killed in January 41, Marcus wasn't able to save him as he got precautionary knocked out and bound to his bed by the murderers who knew that he would never let them get near the emperor. He managed to break free but when he arrived at the scene it was already too late - Caligula was dead. Overwhelmed by grief and rage Marcus started a rampaging attack, hitting the murderers and connivers as well as bystanders and innocent senators. Nonetheless, after this tragic event and the loss of his beloved emperor, Marcus was mentally broken and so he, formerly known for his incredible pride and strength, was a more than easy target for all those that had been against him and Caligula for years already. Three days later a dead body was seen floating in the river Tiber, severely beaten, stabbed multiple times and with his throat cut open...
