The young woman sat back in the hard wood seat and tried to phase out the preacher who had so enraptured her sister. He hadn't stopped his evangelistic tirade in over an hour, and it was still a long way from their stop. She had a headache and so wished he'd be quiet.
Trying to focus on something, anything, else she looked out the window and let the repetitive barren landscape wash over her. Dirt, rock, tree, dirt, rock, bird... The train rattled on, lulling her into a doze until something caught her eye and she sat up with a start.

A man was standing down the track, around a bend from where her carriage was at that moment. She had a glimpse of him, standing with his nose barely two feet from the side of the rushing train, his arms hanging loose by his sides and his hat fluttering in the wind, tempting fate to jump from his head at any moment. Then he was gone, obscured by the body of the train. Ignoring her sister's questions she struggled with the window, sudden fear gripping her, the need to see where the man had gone. But the latch was jammed and as she fought with it, tearing one finger of her glove open, she looked up just in time to see two burning eyes set under a deep shadowed brow, they burned with rage and hate and then he was gone. Gone by in a flicker of light and a rattle of iron on iron.

"Did you see that?" She asked, but the preacher and her sister just looked at her confused.
"My dear," said the preacher. "I do believe the heat of the day is getting to you."
"I-- No there was a man..." she looked back out the window and with the help of the preacher it was opened.
"A man?"
"By the side of the train."
"Some vagabond I have no doubt, a drifter following the tracks."
"I suppose you're right," she leant out, careless of the soot in the air and looked up and down the length of the train. Behind them there was nothing but track over prairie and dust, ahead the train rushed on towards the bridge over the river. "He's gone. I hope he didn't get sucked under the train."
"Don't say such horrible things!" her sister admonished as the sound of the wheels changed and they went over water. "He probably jumped aboard to get to the next town!"

The words had barely left her lips when there was a terrible crunch from the front of the train, an not even a second later the engine was engulfed in fire and shrieking steam as it ploughed down the twisted tracks and into the stone bank. The carriages bucked and the passengers were thrown forwards in chaos, screams filled the air, then fire and water replaced the air and smothered the water.

Some Years Previously
He scuffled in the dust and fell backwards, stunning himself of the hard ground. The one of the two men standing over him kicked dirt in his face before he was pulled away, his companion pointing up at something. They barked harsh laughter at him, "Well that solves our problem!" and kicked him once more for luck. "May you serve as a fucking warning to the rest of you railway bitches, keep away from what's ours!"
His head was still spinning when he heard them running away and tried to sit up, ribs screaming in agony and blood clogging in dust about his mouth. The world spun as he tried to get his bearings, remembering vaguely that he'd run into the mouth of the tunnel to escape, there were vibrations under his hands and he fought to remember what that meant as he sucked in deep sooty breaths to steady himself.

Something howled in the darkness and he looked up with horror at the wall of steel thundering down at him. "Fuck you..."
