The hospital is cold. The wind is silent and distant howling can be heard. Wolves. The breathing of each patient is slow and steady, the sound of rubbing bedsheets a common occurrence. You glance up at the bland ceiling, beginning to count the holes within the tiles. You know you're dying, the doctors assuming Diptheria, yet sadly no cure is in stock. You're the fourteenth case this week. Living in such a remote part of Alaska, the only way to obtain the antitoxin this deep into winter is through dogsled. They made their way out three days ago, and haven't returned. Closing your eyes slowly, you imagine yourself in summer, playing with your dog, being with your friends... a normal child.

Slowly falling into a deep slumber, your roommate begins to cough. You've heard her parents and the doctors discussing that she's on her last few days. This is the third time in two days. Sighing loudly, your eyelids begin to shut and wait until it ceases...yet it doesn't. You sit up, tired and aching all over as it is. Flashing your gaze to your roommate, a 12 year old like yourself with the same curse as well, you realize that it's not a normal episode. Too weak to arise from your bed, you shout as loud as you can. "Nurse!" Your voice is feeble like a whisper, as no lights turn on and no footsteps can be heard.

Suddenly, through the window comes a figure as if a ghost. Confused and wheezing, you stop trying to speak and only watch. Brillant blue eyes peer up at you, obviously scanning for any signs of trouble, then turns its attention to the coughing child next to you. It's her...A large white wolf, wings tucked closely to her back. A bandage is wrapped around her left front limb while a onyx band is clasped around the other. Gracefully making her way to the bedside, she places her large head next under the child's arm. The coughing abruptly stops as the child rolls to pet the large beast's back. The child's breathing is shallow, burying her head within the animal's fur. Nudging the child back into bed, another child's coughing can be heard on the floor above. The wolf's ears perk, her attention focused on the prevalent noise. Looking back to her first patient, she licks the child's cheek, and averts her gaze to you. Seeming to smile, she spreads her wings, floating effortlessly up through the roof of your room. You peek over at your roommate, who has already turned over and asleep. Laying back into the warmth of your bed, your eyes flutter shut as you fall into a dream.

You wake up to find the bed next to you empty. The doctor comes in and gives you a smirk. "I don't understand why, but Olivia was feeling better today...so she went home with parents for her remaining days. You have your room to yourself for a while. Your parents are here to see you as well." He turns and leaves abruptly after giving another quick smile. He leaves as your parents walk in. They have grins on their face, shielding their fear and anxiety. "How was your night baby?" Oh mother, she's always been very optimistic. You glance at the window, seeing Olivia and her parents trudging through the small amounts of snow back to their house. Looking back to your parents, you manage to express a small smile. "Oh you know, same old."
