She had screamed for Atobe, but the Nightmare Kumos who had kidnapped her from the clearing simply laughed; the laugh was horrifying, for his mouth melted and deformed the entire time, spewing dark mist that smelled like raw meat. "Yer mate is dead, Miss Marsh Montre. Shot 'im with a poison arrow right in 'e heart."

Dead? No. No. The woods around her cage seemed to vanish as the truth of it descended on her. The Nightmare Kumos continued to talk. "Me Lord is gunna be please with yer little self, Miss Marsh. Yew've got great wings an' the purply eyes means mattery soldier. Once I get there..." The words he was saying weren't important. Revam lay down in shock, shutting down.

Just a few weeks before, she had been drinking from the pond near her home when a cacophonous howl echoed across Elg Swamp. It had been a Common Montre in trouble; her father had caught him inside their Regg coop, and had chased him until he had caught his tail on a fence. Now the thief hung by said tail with several Regg falling out of his paws and another captured between his teeth. The bird minions rolled away comically. Bruda -her father- slowly approached the young male and removed the terrified Regg from his jaws.

"Going somewhere?" The elder said threateningly. Gasping in pain, the thief tried to free himself. "Ah fu-ah-apparently not." He said in a surprisingly mature voice. "Please -ah- help-" Something in his voice made both Bruda and Revam think he wasn't just asking about his tail.

Her father had taken him in on the condition he teach Revam the skills he had learned as a thief, which stunned the young woman. "War is coming," he told her that evening when she protested. "That boy is no angel, but I will not cast him out into the jaws of the Houl. Nightmare beasts in the woods... no, evil is afoot." He had shaken his grizzled head and the many charms his ears wore chimed lightly. "Learn what he has to offer, and learn it perfect." There had been no more discussion.

Days later, they came in the night. Bruda had fought, of course, though at his age he could do little to even slow them. His death had been brutal. Thrust together, Atobe and Revam had fled into the wilds in a desperate bid to survive.

The ambush had taken them by surprise, frightening off the forest-dwelling Warador who had joined them in their flight. The arrow had been so fast she'd barely seen it, wasn't even sure it had hit him... but it had. Revam stared into the fire until the coals died down and the night was not long for the world.

Had she fallen asleep? It didn't seem so, and yet the air was suddenly different. A new scent caught Revam's nose, one she could not understand. A clattering noise echoed suddenly from beside her and she lurched across the cage. The Nightmare Kumos, who was sleeping near the fire, snorted loudly in response and Revam froze. The clattering had come from a small mass of strange dark eyes and tiny white heads... were they skulls? It didn't seem to be threatening, bobbing in the center of the cage and staring at her. It just seemed interested. "Hello?" Revam whispered, hoping for a response. The mass parted, and two shapes flew out, one large skull and what appeared to be a equally large blob of Dark Matter. They looked at each other for a moment, then flew around the female Montre. They circled quickly, faster and faster -suddenly the entire black mass lurched and engulfed her!

Revam woke to what seemed to be blinding moonlight. Everything seemed so vibrant and clear, including the misty form of the Nightmare Kumos. In her mind she could feel the two voices arguing, the clattering voices of her new self. They reminded her - at once, and in two different ways- that she knew how to escape from this cage with nothing but her tail. Tiny motes of Skull Matter drifted around Revam like a ring of light. WE'VE GOT TO GO... said Clatter...
