The battle raged as an immortal woman watched silently. It was a battle as old as time; a fight between good and evil.

Clarissa had learned long ago, the battle was never ending. Clarissa had visited countless battlefields in her lifetime, her presence never known and only seen by those who were worthy; those who she choose.

High in the sky, together, she and her sisters watched. She was scouting for the brave and courageous, for the selfless and for those who were worthy of her gift. Her blue eyes scan over the countless number of souls as they fought. She could hear the sounds of swords swinging, of swords clashing, of armor being pierced and the screams of dying humans.

Her eyes locked onto the man with a golden crown on his head. The king every one of her sisters waited to bring home. And in time, one of them would. When he died, a Valkyrie would be waiting.

The king did not know it yet, but his soul had been marked years ago for a higher purpose. Leading his people to freedom was only the beginning.

The king was a legend among the keepers of Valhalla. He was barely of age, when he was gifted his legendary sword and became king. His battles had become legendary and his victories numerous.

He had become a true master of war and Valhalla needed him.

Men like him, weren’t born very often. Clarissa had seen very few in all her years. After his death, he’ll continue his legacy. He’ll lead both Valkyrie and Einherjar alike in the last battle. He’ll lead a glorious battle.

As she watched him, she noticed two women fighting by his side. One had magic flowing through her veins. Magic almost lost to this world. Any enemy who ventured to close fell to her magic.

The other wielded a sword made from iron. Clarissa took interest in this woman. She was of the same blood as the king and the magic user. Unlike the other two, there was nothing magical about her.

Clarissa watched as the woman protected the girl and the king. The woman brought husbands, fathers, and sons to their knees. There was no hesitation. Each opponent took her further away from her allies.

Beside Clarissa, her sisters began to descend. Each had found souls worthy of taking home. They would train and become Einherjar. They would live to fight in another battle.

Watching the woman, Clarissa realized she had found a soul worth saving. The woman had fought valiantly. But her time was up. The woman gave a short gasp as she was run through by an enemy’s sword.

Clarissa plunged to the earth.

Clarissa watched as the king, the mage and allies fought to get to her fallen body. The Valkyrie knew they would not make it in time. The woman’s time was up. She had done all she could in this life. This woman had earned her spot in Valhalla.

Landing on the ground, Clarissa took long and deliberate steps. Every step was mindful of a fallen warrior. It was a great honor to die on the battlefield. But, it was an even greater honor to be chosen as a warrior for Valhalla.

Long ago, Clarissa herself had been chosen. Like all of her sistren, she had earned her place in Valhalla and among Valkyrie’s.

Like most of Valhallan warriors, Clarissa could not remember her human life or how she had earned her place. All Clarissa could remember was her name and waking up in Valhalla.

Unlike her sisters, Clarissa was not born Valkyrie. Clarissa had become the first Einherjar to earn the right to become a Valkyrie. She was not the last. Nowadays many of her sisters were former Einherjar.

Cautiously, she approached the dark haired woman lying face up. She was almost identical to the magic user; twin sisters no doubt.

The woman’s eyes began to glaze over and her breaths were labored. In that moment Clarissa allowed the woman to see her. A surprised gasp escaped the young woman as she looked up at Clarissa.

Interestingly, the woman’s cheeks are not stained by tears. Tears were often seen when warriors died. Many humans feared death and the unknown. Clarissa was pleased that this woman was not like others. She was unafraid of death. For the first time in a few millennia, Clarissa smiled.

The woman stared up at her and then coughed up blood. Clarissa never moved. Only when the warrior closed her eyes and took her last breath did Clarissa act.

Clarissa reached down to her satchel and pulled out a palm sized clear crystal. She knelt down next to the warrior woman and hovered the crystal over the warrior’s heart. Clarissa closed her eyes and began to utter the ancient words of her people; the words that Odin himself taught the first Valkyrie’s. The ancient magic allowed Valkyries to save the souls of dead warriors.

As Clarissa spoke the ancient language the crystal began to change color and gain weight. Clarissa let the crystal fall from her fingertips. The crystal made a clinking noise as it came into contact with the woman’s breastplate.

Her bright blue eyes opened as she watched light radiate from the dead warrior; the woman’s soul was currently transferring from her body to the Valhallan crystal. Once the transfer was complete, Clarissa would be able to transport the woman to Valhalla. There she would be released from the crystal.

The last of the brilliant light faded from the woman’s body, entering the crystal. There, the woman’s soul glowed bright. All pure souls glowed bright, the rest were dark.

Once she was sure the woman’s soul was safe, she picked up the small crystal. Clarissa cradled the crystal with care as she placed it back into its cushioned compartment.

Not every soul could be saved, but that did not mean that she couldn't scout the battlefield one last time for worthy souls. Once she and her sisters were done choosing the lucky few, they would bring them home; were they would train until they were needed to fight once more.
