The Goddess of the Sea

No one is quite sure of Nerys's true origins - after so long, not even Nerys herself. Legend has it that she and Brandt were born of two fruits from the same tree and grew to be great gods. Nerys, small and wise, ruled over the ocean, beaches, and fields. Brandt, strong and powerful, ruled over mountain, river and forest. Together, they formed the lands of Cydwedd and Ysdril.

Before Pridd was established, the country of Ysdril had reigned the vacant, vast plains and hillside towns between the other countries of the Oceanic Nations. None of Pridd's neighbors - Deheuba and Uphir to the south, Donaghan to the west, and Cydwedd to the east - had enjoyed having Ysdril so close. This was especially true, however, for Cydwedd. Cydwedd was a wealthy country, with vast resources at its disposal. It controlled the eastern banks of the Cydfaiil River, the beaches along the Cyfeilla Ocean, and was a country that upheld magery as its highest honor. Its gods, representatives of the elements of Sky, Sea, Plain and Mountain, were beloved by all of Cydwedd's people, and they had a rich history of magic.

Ysdril, however, did not share that love. Magic and its uses were banned in Ysdril, and it was widely accepted that even the gods of Ysdril did not use magic, but rather shunned it as immoral. This difference may have been little enough to keep Ysdril and Cydwedd at peace with one another, but Ysdril was greedy. Surely a country as accepting and embracing of magic as Cydwedd did not deserve the beautiful resources at its disposal.

Rumors began to spread around Cydwedd like wildfire - rumors of war. Ysdril was building their army, and they were setting up extra defenses and troops in their lower lands, south of the Mynydd Peaks. In response, Cydwedd set up strong defenses along their borders. No one was allowed to leave the country without good reason to do so; entering was even more difficult. A rather peaceful country up until now, Cydwedd's army was small and under-trained, and they were highly vulnerable.

The gods of Cydwedd, who lived in the Other Realm of Cylor, did not tend to intervene with ongoings in the mortal world, but they too grew fearful. They knew that a war would devastate their land and their people. In an attempt to calm the brewing intensity, the leader of the Gods of Cylor, Nerys of the Sea, went to the gods of Ysdril and begged for them to put a stop to it.

Sadly, this meeting did not go as planned. She and her 'brother', Brandt, had never seen eye-to-eye, and he refused to step down, calling Nerys a fool that would soon learn her place. Nerys left the meeting in Holdren feeling distraught - but further determined to protect her land and her people. She brooded for many days, scheming and planning, while her people below increased their defenses and her fellow gods and followers prepared for attack. She traveled over her country in secret, looking for answers and searching for a solution. Despite all of her searching, nothing came to her.

It was while watching a group of mages practice in perfect unison, their spirits connected and their powers doubling due to the bond, that Nerys came up with a plan. Ysdril may have outlawed magery, but they could not stop people from merely possessing mage powers. Prejudice against open mages was strong and harsh in Ysdril, and open practice meant arrest or even death. Indeed, there had always been many, many unhappy Ysdrili mages, frustrated with the country's extreme measures for protecting against magic use. It was in them that Nerys saw opportunity.

She did something that no other before her had done - and none since, for there has yet to be a need as great as Nerys's was then. She went to the mortal land, not among her own people, but among the Ysdrilis. With ferocity, she and her followers sought out Ysdrili Mages and encouraged them. "Do not hide your powers any longer," she'd say, with ferocity and boldness. "Stand up! Rise against those that have shunned you, that have kept you hidden for far too long! Fight, and we will fight with you -- and we will give you a land to call yours when it is all said and done!"

She spoke with such passion that very few could deny her request. Soon, the rumors were spreading around Ysgard rather than Cydwedd, rumors of revolt against the government and its harsh, anti-magery laws.

Nerys knew she was fueling the fire of fight between her and Brandt, and the results were exactly what she expected: merely days after the revolt began, the Ysdrili capital officially declared war on Cydwedd. And while their army was still drastically small compared to Ysdril's, they had a weapon that Ysdril had never seen coming, that they had never taken seriously: their own people.

Hundreds of hundreds of mages within Ysdril's own borders began to attack, to defend lower Ysdril with an intensity that could not be matched. They helped strengthen the border of Cydwedd, they lined the mountain foothills and plains, preventing numerous members of Ysdril's northern troops from joining those below. They fought with the very thing they had been denied for so long: magic. For even without proper training, every mage understood the power growling in their bellies. Every mage felt the pull of the current of the vast magical river that connected them to their elements. Years of pent up anger and rage was a powerful weapon, and with the help of the Cydweddians, lead by Nerys and her follow gods - and also those from Deheuba, Uphir, and Donaghan that had come to fight along- side their allies - the mages of Southern Ysdril were able to push the Ysdrili troops past the mountains once longer and out of their new land.

Many died, and many parts of lower Ysgard were left trampled and devastated. Nerys, however, kept her word. She sent her people to help rebuild lower Ysgard. In fact, she oversaw the work herself, keeping to the mortal plane as long as she could, until the land was fertile and beautiful once more.

Those Cydweddians who wished to stay in the new land were more than welcome to do so, and many stayed from the fellow sister countries as well, giving rise that the new land would once again grow strong and proud. A king and queen were declared from the most sensible of the new citizens, and the central city of Cydry was declared the new capital, where all people, mages and non mages alike, could live in harmony.

Before returning to Cylor, however, Nerys used her power to give the new country one last gift: she created its immortal plane, the sister land of her own Cradle, and brought to it the four most promised mages that had survived the war. Here, she helped them form the land of Theede, and they became the Cardinal Gods known in Pridd today.

Thus, the country of Pridd was formed, and Nerys returned to Cylor for what became known as the Hundred Year Sleep. She had used a great deal of energy helping form a new country, after all.

Having woke well-rested long ago, Nerys returned to quietly serving her people out-of-site and protecting her land and precious sea. With the current unrest between the gods of Pridd and Ysdril, however, she fears she may again have to intervene - lest Brandt take what he considers rightfully his...
