Story

The nightmare pherret wound her way through the forest's thick undergrowth, mist trailing in her wake. She was in a hurry, and was intent on navigating the dark wood as quickly as possible. So intent, in fact, that she had no warning of the attack until it was too late. She heard only a rush of air, then a horrid raspy screech as claws raked across the top of her head. Bracing herself for a fight, the seasoned warrior scanned the forest floor around her for her attacker. Nothing.

She heard the noise again, behind and above her, a barely-audible fluttering. She turned her head just in time to see a streak of black and red flying straight for her face. She rolled out of the way, and the feathery bullet veered off and landed on a nearby branch. A battle crow. It glared at Visla with glowing red eyes.

"Lay off, would ya?" Visla stuck her nose in the air, a clear indication that battling a little crow (...okay, a big crow, but it didn't need to know she thought so) was beneath her. "I'm not interested in your eggs or whatever. I prefer chicken," she said with a smirk. The crow cocked its head, regarding her almost thoughtfully. The pherret huffed and continued on her way.

Visla soon got the sense that she was being followed. She could hear sounds behind her -- a rustle here, a cracking branch there. She ignored it for a while -- she was in a hurry, dammit! -- but finally sighed and stopped. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw the crow again, nearly hidden in the twisted branches of an old, dead tree. She could have sworn it was trying to look nonchalant. If crows could whistle, Visla was sure this one would have been.

"If you want to come with me, at least don't insult my intelligence by trailing me so obviously," Visla called to the bird. The crow ruffled its feathers, looking almost offended. Then, seeming to consider her offer, it launched itself off the branch and sped at Visla again... but this time, to alight softly on her shoulder. "That's better, Red," the pherret said, satisfied.

He was the first of her glowing-eyed minions.
