When I dance I become joy, my body becomes the rhythm of the drums, the song of the flute. I become the song and let my movements paint the melody for you to see.

Belly Dance means many different things to many different people. Some will tell you it originated in Ancient Egypt, others will tell you it developed amongst the tribes of Arabia or the peoples of the Silk Road, or even India. All of the above are true and all have influenced each other: they have fused with each other and new styles are emerging from them all the time. Belly Dance is a beautiful, living, vibrant thing and is in constant flux.

Most people are familiar with cabaret style Belly Dance with a dancer in a glittering bra and gauzy, shimmering skirt, but depending on where you are the dancer might wear a s slinky dress or a loose, wide garment modestly covering most of her (especially when performing in mixed company). Belly Dancers can be male too!

There is the sexy cabaret style (but never, ever think Belly Dance is a form of striptease!), there is classic, elegant Egyptian Belly Dance and joyful, energetic Turkish Belly Dance, then there is Tribal Belly Dance, which is really a wonderful modern fusion of many different ancient dance styles (with a good dose of gothic thrown in). There are many more forms and styles, the list could go on and on!

To some Belly Dance is an ancient, empowering spiritual ritual, to others a joyous and sensual celebration of life and music; really it means something different to every single dancer out there. To each of us it means something different.

To me it is a way to transcend time and space, to forget the constraints of every day life, to leave my insecurities behind and to bond with my body and celebrate all it's little "imperfections", because this is me, in all my glory! To become one with myself and the music means to become truly free. Come with me on my journey and share my adventure!

When she begins to dance you forget where you are, you follow her to an enchanted land and time, to a place somewhere in your imagination. She carries you away, the heart beat of the drums becomes your own and for a moment, as long as she dances, you forget all your sorrow and feel the pure joy of the dance.
