There's a moment of security children know all too well. Having heard the warnings, taking step by step is safe enough for them. One, two, three, not a single crack on the ice and that one phrase they heard has vanish. The wind beckons them to get closer. There I stand, completely motionless like a tree sticking out for a second. Not the snow nor the wind quite chills my skin like that water. I feel it climb like a hoard of ants from my legs to my neck, the water pushes down on me from all sides to submerge me to its depths. Maliciously, it makes me ache and burns my body as I rise back up to the moon light. Something drives my instinct to survive and struggle as I taste the cold and feel every drop of liquid down my throat. Then my breath clogs, I suffocate, my lungs feel squish and immobilize, blood pounding behind my eyes. Yet the water seems so calm as it engulfs me. I realize my inability to scream, my mind opens up a million questions. Why am I fighting? I deserve this... I accept this... I give into it. I stop trying to gasp and cherish the icy last moments. I cannot stop wondering, I suppose that is how life flashes before you. Why? Why am I grinning? I laugh to myself as my vision darkens; I don't even want to think about those cautious words I thought I understood. My muscles finally relax. Truth is that I sink to the bottom and let myself freeze. This is my judgement.
