I am one of the few remaining genderless pets. And I'll never have a gender either, really, what good would that do a sword?

The Legend
Katana is, in and of itself, not truly a living creature, at least, not in the way humans seem to understand. Katana was 'born' in the heat of a mastersmith's forge, his heart beat set by the pounding of the craftsmen's hammer, awakened by the shock of ice cold spring water dousing it's fine tempered edges. You see, Katana is a sword, but not just any ordinary sword. Legend has it that a master swordsmith can spend his whole life forging swords in the hopes of creating but one truly magnificent sword, a sword so sharp, so strong, that it is 'alive.' A sword so great, its as if it was sent down from the heavens themselves, a divine sword.

Truly, any sword that could be so powerful could turn a peasant into a general king to raise a nation, or a street thief into a great warlord the likes of which could cripple an empire. It is precisely for these reasons that the art of how to create such amazing swords is such a closely guarded secret; the likes of which have caused the deaths of many great sword smiths and their families, when some such unscrupulous people have come demanding one of these swords, at any price.

Katana was arguably one of the last of these great swords ever forged, as his creator was one of the very last sword smiths with the knowledge of how to create such an entity. He was a good and wise man, who refused to sell his blades to anyone but the noblest of samurai. Unfortunately, such fame doesn't go unnoticed - he had been approached many times by members of local crime families, and lords who had plans of grandeur. He had turned them all down, claiming his blades would not help them, referring them to other smiths instead, ones whom he knew could never forge such a blade. Alas, there are some people who never intended upon buying such a sword from him to begin with.

The mastersmith had been working on this sword for many months, heating and folding the blade over and over, tempering the edge to a razor sharpness. It was unfortunate that, although he finished the blade itself, he would never finish mounting the sword in anything more than the tsuka (most basic wooden section of a hilt). That evening as he worked by the edge of his forge's smoldering flame, carving out a scabbard for the blade, a group of ninjas snuck into his home. A fight ensued, but alas, he was no match for them, as one of them grabbed the sword he had just forged from the rack it sat on, and stabbed the smith with it. Gasping as he lay bleeding to death on his floor, slain by his own sword, he whispered the blade's name, trying to call to it in his last pleading, feeble effort, "...Tenshin”

But the blade never heard its name, as it died with its creator, leaving Katana lacking one of the key elements that would have truly allowed it to ascend to the status of divinity like other blades before it. Lacking any definition of true self, Katana remained as just that, a Japanese blade stained in the blood of its own creator, a katana. This sword would not become a legend with tales told about its power, no one would speak its name in wonder like they did so many of the others - Masamune, Kusanagi, Muramasa. Not Katana, the nameless sword.

The blade is what the ninja had come for, paid by a wealthy landlord to bring the sword smith's greatest masterpiece to him, to bring him a divine sword. The landlord believed the legend that a master's perfect sword would allow him to become invincible, granting him heavenly power, and lead an uprising against the emperor. The ninja took all of the blades in the smith's forge with them, one of them would surely be the right sword, the perfect sword. But one ninja knew, recognized Katana as the true heaven-sent sword of the ones they had stolen from the master's shop, and realized what would surely come if he handed the sword over to the landlord, not just for the villagers in the area, but for his ninja clan as well. He instead passed off another one of the dead master's blades as the perfect sword, keeping Katana a secret and sending the sword away to another allied clan of ninjas, believing it would be safer there. The ninja paid dearly for his treachery when the landlord discovered his blade was a fake, and set out his henchmen to destroy the clan and hunt down the blade.

So began the bloody trail of the last heavenly blade, the blade that fell from heaven, the blade everyone wanted - Katana. There was just one problem that no one, not even the mystical ninjas, realized - blades don't just fall from heaven, they fly, on dragon's wings.
