(Dairine is a fanpet for the character of the same name in the Young Wizards book series, and the series as a whole. I do not claim credit for the contents of her story, only summarizing it.)
"In Life's name and for Life's sake, I say that I will use the Art for nothing but the service of that Life. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so -- till Universe's end."
- The Wizard's Oath
Dairine was always a strong child. When her older sister, Nita, came home from kindergarten crying because she didn't know the answer to a question, Dairine resolved to know the answer to any question a teacher could ask her. When their parents put them in martial arts classes to learn self defense, Dairine threw herself into the lessons, determined not to be bullied. And after watching Star Wars, Dairine decided to be a Jedi.
Well, she came close. In the universe of Young Wizards, magic is real, and wizards gain their powers after taking the Wizard's Oath and going on a dangerous Ordeal against the Lone Power, the source of entropy. After learning that Nita was a wizard, Dairine decided to become one too, and was soon sent on Ordeal to a planet at the very edge of the universe. Here the surface of the ground was as smooth as glass, and silicon ash from volcanos drifted down to form a complex network capable of thought, but unaware that any other life existed in the universe. It was this intelligence that Dairine would wake up, and with her new-found power, create a whole new species of silicon-based lifeforms.
For a brief period of time, Dairine experienced power on the scales very few wizards could match, for the youngest are always the most powerful. When a planet needed to be moved, she was the one the Powers That Be called on. However, such power doesn't last forever, and just as Dairine's was starting to wane, her mother was diagnosed with malignant brain cancer. While Dairine was still powerful, she didn't have the finesse needed to attempt the life-saving wizardry, leaving her older sister, Nita, to try and ultimately fail to save their mother's life.
