"Ah. It's you."

Though the feathered figure addressed you, he did not look up from the enormous tome he had laid before him, quill scratching at the sheer, ethereal pages.

"It is about time you had shown up here, I suppose. How can I help you?"

You look around. Shelves and shelves of countless books lined the space around you, stretching into the darkness both beyond the scribe and into the heavens above.

"Uh," you begin. "Could you tell me where I am?"

"Not easily," said the figure, still fixated on his work. "However, I can say that around us stand the Archives of Heroes, not really a where per se, but it would have to do in planar terms."

You nod, not quite satisfied with the answer but accepting that it was as good as you could get.

"No need to be modest. I can see you have questions," the figure said, not having looked up at you at all. "We here appreciate questions, as they are the mother of knowledge. Ask away."

You hesitate, but the figure seems friendly enough. "Who are you?"

The figure finally looked up. Large, wise eyes locked on your own. You could feel them, finally seizing you up, pulling every detail into its endless void. You feel yourself lean forward.

And then the figure blinked, and you were free.

"I? I am a scribe. One of many. I keep the Archive of Heroes up to date, as much as I can manage."

You nod, feeling uncomfortable now that you finally have the scribe's attention.

"So ... what do people usually come here for? The Archive of Heroes."

"Well, to learn how their stories end, of course."

"Oh."

"Is that not why you are here?"

You ponder for only a moment, then shake your head.

"No?"

"No, I'm not a hero."

"Oh? And by whose definition do you go by?"

You shrug. "Mine."

Those enormous eyes blinked slowly once again. Seconds ticked by, and you begin to fidget, not sure what to say.

"Well," the scribe said finally. "I guess that makes things much easier."
