You always wanted to run away with the circus, even back when you thought a proper circus meant bright colors and loud noises and a cheap sort of shock-value wonder. Those ordinary circuses are good fun, of course, but now, standing in the queue, you are beginning to mark the differences.

"Is this your first time at the Circus?" A pretty boy stands before you in a dark suit with a scarlet muffler wound about his neck. Or maybe it's a girl in boy's clothing. In any case, you smile politely and nod. "I haven't forgotten my first time, and I doubt you will either. Have you tasted the chocolate mice yet?"

You savor the chocolate that was suddenly pressed into your hands, and your newfound companion leads you through the crush of circus-goers past the snow-white bonfire and into a maze of tents.

"Don't bother trying to see it all tonight," he tells you. "Come back again tomorrow, or the night after, or in twenty years. It will be the same, for the most part, and yet there will always be something new--to you, to the circus.... In any case, I mean there is too much circus for one night, or not enough night for the circus. Speaking of which, did you admire that clock on your way in? Its maker writes about the circus, you know; you should read his...but no, I am rambling on, and...."

She shakes her head ruefully and heaves a great sigh, gives herself a shake, and takes your arm.

"Here. Come ride the carousel with me."

And so you queue up, and a moment or two later you climb onto a fancifully carved beast you can't readily put a name to. And then you fly. All too soon, the ride ends and you find yourself back in the maze of tents.

"Did you like it? I thought you might; I always do." Your companion looks pleased, but a little distracted. He smiles. "I'll leave you to your own devices now; I want to go to my favorite tent, and there are so many bottles I always lose track of time.... Enjoy the circus! I would go see the Illusionist, if I were you, and perhaps have your fortune told. Try the popcorn. Good night!"

And just like that, you are alone in the crowd and you have all night to dream.
