Story

Oh I was quite the trickster.

Perhaps you’ve heard of me? My real name has been lost to man’s stumbling tongue, but you may know me as the white stag. Kings from every age have chased me through the bending forests, for it was told if I was snared, I would grant a wish to my captor.

But that is only half true.

For who would bestow a gift upon their jailer? To earn my wish, one simply had to sing. If their song was pleasant, I would grant them what they desired. Yet if they failed my test I would lead them into the deeper forests. There darkness and evil things would devour them; spitting them back out as nothing but the shell of a frightened madman. I had turned kings into fools.

But there was one who thought my tricks were not so amusing. Death sought me out, and when he trapped me, I asked what I had asked of all others- to sing. He was the only one who ever refused my request. Despite his reputation, he was a gentle, kind being. He pitied those I had tricked and forced their curses upon me.

I watched numbly terrified as darkness spread across my being. Chains suddenly choked my body, grasping my limbs, neck, and muzzle. Then, suddenly malicious, Death towered over me. He brought his lips towards my ear and whispered in his sweet voice. “You have become all that you have made.”

Death didn’t take me. I wander the earth, neither dead nor alive. It seems I’ll never rid myself of these heavy weights. They drag along the earth; tiring my cold, dead bones to the point of collapse. But the relief of rest never comes to me. The sins of my life as a trickster have manifested now as noisy chains, ever ringing in my deaf ears.
