A man is drinking green tea when he feels something strange against his upper lip. It feels cold and very much not like tea. He stops mid-sip and looks down into the mug. Two green eyes meet his own.

He jolts back and drops the mug. It doesn’t break, but it rolls across the floor a bit and now there is a mess of tea to clean up. Then it stops moving. The man is about to approach it because surely there isn’t really a creature in his tea. Then the mug shakes and a clear jelly-like substance slips out and onto the floor.

“What the…?” says the man.

The jelly turns around and peers at the man with its green eyes. It uses its two arms to crawl backwards, shying away and absorbing as much tea as it can reach.

It appears harmless. It even cleaned the floor.

The man asks, “You like tea?”

Its eyes seem to get bigger and brighter at that question. It crawls closer and the man crouches down. It slides onto his shoe and tries to sneak underneath the cuff of his jeans. “Ah, no no no,” says the man.

The slimy creature seems to understand. It returns to the shoe and looks up at him. Its organs are visible through its body and the man considers its intelligence while looking at its brain. Pretty smart, he decides.

Cautiously the man offers his hand to the creature. It crawls into his hand and feels slimy and cold, like a melting ice cube.

The man places it on the counter and says, “Stay here a minute. I’ll make you some more tea.”

He tries to keep an eye on it while he grabs a mug and teabag. The creature slides around on the countertop and its eyes are glued to the mug as the man prepares the drink.

Before the tea has time to cool off, the creature is already struggling to climb up the handle.

“Whoa, it’s still hot! Hey, wait,” says the man. But the heat doesn’t seem to bother it. It plops in and swims in circles, looking as happy as can be.

The man smiles and watches the curious little thing splash around. The water level drops as it’s absorbed by the creature. Was that all the nourishment it needed? The man had some research to do. He didn’t think he would be parting with it anytime soon.
