My name was Nova, short for Casanova because I was a lover boy according to my first mommy. I didn’t meet my second mommy until shortly before Thanksgiving in 2013. I was 12, underweight and miserable, and it was my last weekend I had to be adopted before I would be sent to a kill shelter. My sister Trixie and I went home with her. I wasn’t happy. She was doubtful that I’d ever meet up to my Casanova reputation. She never gave up on me, though. It took me a few weeks to stop batting at my second mommy’s hands when she tried to pet me, but when I finally did, I realized how lucky I was. I finally had enough food to eat and all the love I could ever want.

She tried doing all sorts of things to make me happier -- treats, toys, wet food that I didn’t really care for, but eventually she realized that all I needed were enough kibble to eat and her cuddles and pets to be the happiest kitty on the block. And I really was the happiest kitty on the block. I reached a healthy weight, and my mommy was very happy I was adjusting so well.

My sister never adjusted and crossed the rainbow bridge a few months after we were adopted. I was never close to her, but I still comforted my mommy and let her know that it was going to be okay. I was still there, and that was a good thing.

Like all good things, though, it had to come to an end. In the fall of 2014, I started developing feline senility. My mommy was in denial at first. She didn’t want to give up on me, but the vet told her there was nothing they could do for me and to call them when she was ready to schedule the appointment to say goodbye to me.

She did her best to make me comfortable for as long as possible. I was scared and confused more and more. I forgot who my mommy was a number of times, but I eventually remembered again and let her know how sorry I was that I batted at her like it was a year ago all over again. I didn’t want to upset her. She still gave me the best pets and cuddles and put a soft plush blanket at the head of the bed for me to sleep on next to her. I liked that.

I slowly lost weight again, but it was easily hidden under all of my fur. My mommy had a rough time acknowledging it, but definitely noticed and weighed me. I’d lost over 5 lbs of my original new healthy weight. Christmas was fast approaching, and she had wanted me to have the last best Christmas ever and hoped I would stay for her 30th birthday several days later to celebrate with her.

That wasn’t meant to be, though, as nice as it would have been. I know she would have made it really special for me. There are some things beyond my control, and this was one of them. She started keeping a closer eye on me and realized I’d stopped eating. It was my way of telling her it was time. It was hard for her, but she listened to me and made an appointment with the vet the next day. I wished I could dry the tears that dripped down her face on and off the entire day, but all I could do was rub my face against her and ask her for more pets and cuddles. It was one of her favorite things, and she deserved to have nice things. She gave me a second chance and the best year of my life.

On the morning of December 18, 2014, my mommy took me to the vet. I was scared at first and didn’t like the car ride there. The vet gave me a shot that started to make me very sleepy, but I was getting lots of pets and love so I didn’t really mind as I drifted off. I said good night and shortly afterward joined my sister Trixie on the other side of the rainbow bridge.
