There's always a sneering condescension to it. The challenge going unmet, the disbelief that this is all you're settling for. Prosaic. What, don't you want to be extraordinary? Don't you know that happiness is 100% the responsibility of the individual. Why are you so lazy? Stop blaming everyone else.

As though there's more to life; as though you, yes you, can reach some grand intellectual breakthrough. Nirvana rings out, and in this perfect moment you've figured out the meaning of life. Time's arrow marches on, and you coast through, breezing down gently like a feather. (And you are magnanimous enough to share this purpose of life, for a comparatively nominal fee)

Everyone gets what they deserve, every little thing in its rightful place. Time's arrow marches on and all I see are deaths I never wanted, diseases I never asked for, conflict, toil, and well, this is all my fault isn't it? Every single thing that was I was wronged for, I deserve. Every time someone else took the easy or incompetent way out and I pay for it, I should just forgive and forget. Isn't it all just so convenient for the boot? It's always the neck's fault. The neck is supposed to get over itself. The neck is supposed to forget that the boot enjoyed the ride, and how dare the neck object about it.

And I am so far from that vision of white picket fences. Aren't there so many of us, far across the street? Isn't that fence getting further and further away? They are pulling that fence, that house away, even as they tell us that even the baseline is not enough
