Jiri got sick. He got very, very sick. He should've died. When he left the city, that was his plan. Go out, leave the festering, stinking place behind and die somewhere beautiful. Out under open sky, surrounded by nature unsullied. He waited for death, but it never came. And so, he stayed out there. Jiri built himself a little shack on the steep bank of the river and tried to live out a life he wasn't sure he'd earned. But the day came when the dead were too many to bury, and the bodies came down the river. Many came exactly as they had died. Jiri was not proud of what he did, but he was a mortal man living by the skin of his teeth. He took their rings, their amulets, the totems and trinkets tucked away in soggy pockets. They sold no differently from anything else. No one asked where they came from. No one needed to know.
