Evgeny accrued debts he could never hope to pay. The obvious answer was to sell his boat and hope a steady job at the cannery would pay off the rest before old age. Instead, he left in the night. As far as his old life was concerned, Evgeny was dead. He sailed up the river to lie low in a remote place, fully intending on making a new life a few cities over when the heat died down.
