Inspirations: Legendary figure Siyâvash, of the epic poem Shahnameh
The exiled prince. Sia is a warrior poet of immeasurable skill, pure of heart, levelheaded and faithful. He travels with two constant companions, for they have chosen to stand by him in hardship: his beloved life partner, and his trusty steed. He cares for both of them deeply and diligently. Siavash is a protector of the innocent and an upholder of just and righteous order; he is a reliable friend to all.
Minion: Shabrang Behzad (Persian شبرنگ بهز , literally “night-coloured purebred”). In the Shahnameh, Siyâvash’s horse is a stallion, but in this retelling Sia’s steed is a mare. Shabrang has the mystical power to pass through flames unharmed, but only a rider whose heart is just and kind can receive this protection for themself. Shabrang herself is proud and opinionated, but Siavash loves to ask her for her “beast’s wisdom,” and never allows another rider in her saddle without first asking Shabrang’s consent. For this reason, Shabrang would gallop a thousand and one nights, through burning hills and ashen valleys, were her master to require it of her; and she too would never abandon someone in need, for that is the code her prince abides by.
