“Daddy’s home”

A rush of excitement washes over me as the red Jeep pulls into the drive. My tail pops up and thrashes from side to side. I throw out my front paws asking for a hug from father as far as I could until the collar around my neck holds me back. I can’t help but howl loudly as this excitement peaks. Howls turn into a broken crow, then back to a primal bellow.

“Oh, I’m so glad you’re home!”

Father looked up at me as he turned and headed up the couple stairs into the home he and the small one they call Grace occupies. Without much hesitation he opens the front door and he’s gone just as fast as he arrived. My butt stopped wiggling and I sat there below the trees and dirt.

“He must be busy right now! He will come to see me soon! I know it.”

My collar was attached to a chain, the chain attached to a line that soared the sky between this tree and a tree just out by the pasture. My time out here has caused the grass to wear away beneath the links of the chain that holds me captive. A 5 gallon bucket sitting just in the grass outside this circle of dirt full of moldy water. Three mean, wild captive horses watch over me occasionally from their pasture near me. Sometimes they escape their captivity and they come steal my food! I hate it when they do that! But this is my home, under the sparse cover of these few trees. I am a wild dog after all!

Some time passes and the front door opens...

“Dad! I missed you!”

Father emerges with a large cup of what I know is my kibble from the cover of his home. He’s not so wild, that’s why he lives in there. My tail begins it’s dance. My lungs fill with air as I can’t help but to wail in excitement that Father is coming straight in my direction! It’s so joyous when he comes to see me! My paws can’t keep still and I gallop as far as I can side to side against the evil pull of my chain.

“Oh boy!”

Father walks into range of my flailing paws and he pats my head a couple times telling me that I am a good boy. “I so am!” This makes me even more happy. He dumps the kibbles into my bowl. Pats me on the head a couple more times then begins to recede back to his home.

I am very sad to see him go. He is such a busy, busy human. My body has stopped wiggling and now I sit watching him as he leaves as quickly as he appeared into the house. Sometimes Father allows me to come inside! But since I am wild I always find a way back outside and I like to roam. Dad is always not so happy when I do that and decides that I will stay on my chain in my own home most of the time because I am too much of an escape artist. He’s told me the other humans around do not take kindly to me rummaging around their homes and chasing their fighting roosters. Pffffft. They’re just dumb birds anyway!

The sun starts to set a couple hours later from the last time I seen Father. My kibbles still sitting untouched in their bowl start to call to my gurgling stomach. But I dare not remove my eyes from the porch where Father was last seen. The wind starts to pick up and with it the smell of rain washes into my nostrils. Within a couple minutes the rain is here and I can’t help but become soaked in another merciless assault from the sky and the ever so strong Mother Nature. I’ve decided to curl up next to a tree and take a nap.

This is my life. For many years.

I am jostled awake by the rumbling of a diesel truck driving towards mine and father’s homes. This large red dodge is very familiar to me. I have seen it come in and out of my life since I was just a pup. This is Father’s kin and I do love when he visits me! He always comes to give me pats and even feeds and waters me! Father calls him Shiloh.

The dodge stops and both front doors open. Shiloh is here! With guest! A small human, not as small as Grace but not as big as Shiloh hops out of the side of the truck closest to me. Oh it’s her! She likes to come give me pats too! My lungs well with air and I bellow my song of approval and excitement. My paws dance beneath me and my tail swishes in agreement. They are coming straight toward me! The couple moves into my dirt circle and begin petting me. Pulling out the clumps of my fur my body is shedding. It feels so good to have them pet me. Father had not made it home today so I have been a little lonely out here under my trees.

They are speaking to me telling me they are sorry for taking so long. They say I am leaving now and ask if I’m ready. Ready for what though?? Shiloh disappears into the house that is Fathers and emerges with MY LEASH! Oh boy! I haven’t been walked in so long! Shiloh fights to attach the leash to my collar as I dance and cry loudly in excitement. I am going for a walk! The couple walks me down the path they drove up then back stopping periodically to let me urinate on things and sniff other things. Oh this is so exciting.

As they walk me back to the giant red dodge they open the back door. A car ride! I haven’t had one of those in even longer then a walk! Without hesitation I accept their offer of a ride. I’m just excited to be with them that I totally forgot about Father not arriving from work yet. The truck starts and we three head down the long bumpy path to town. I wonder where we are going. Shiloh even rolled down my window and I can stick my head out of it and smell the sweet land and animals as we go.

Two and a half hours later....

I have just been looking out the window now, it got way to windy! But we have just stopped in front of a house. I do not know where we are. I don’t not know why we are here. And I don’t know where my Father is. This is odd. The truck turns off and Shiloh and girl exit. Shiloh comes back to open the car door for me. I am so excited but so very scared to jump this far down to the ground. The excitement forces me to overcome my fear for a split second and I leap to the hard surface below.

We make our way to the front door of the house. This place smells weird. It smells of another dog, someone familiar. The door opens and a chunky, black and brown stumpy dog wiggles uncontrollably in front of us as we enter. Oh this guy... the fat spoiled one. He is not wild. He has come to Fathers house and he never stays at my house with me and the others like a real dog. He just goes out to pee, cry and greet the other dogs before running back to the door of Fathers house to be let in.

The small female crows at this dog, he is usually always with her when she appears at Fathers house when Shiloh brings her. She’s obviously very obsessed with this pampered guy. He doesn’t seem to interested in anyone other then her either. I make my escape into the home and begin casing the place. Smells like another dog that I can’t seem to find. The scent isn’t very strong so he mustn’t have been here recently. This home is very large. Soft stuff is under my feet but it’s not like grass. I’ve felt it before but it’s still foreign to me. I’ve figured out there is many doors in this place and there’s a comfy couch! This couch shall be my couch. When Shiloh and the girl aren’t looking I raise my leg to lay claim to it.

Just as I was beginning to get settled on my new couch the humans reappeared with my leash in hand and the black and brown fluffy dog began whining in excitement at them. They placed a strange ‘harness’ on me and hooked me to the leash. We are going for another walk! This one lasted much longer then the first one and there was so many smells of other dogs as we passed houses that looked just like the one we were just in. We have walked what seems like is forever, the fat dog is huffing loudly now. We make it back to the large red truck and enter the house again. The humans remove the harness and leash from me and I am free! I run around the house with so much excitement.

The humans begin to do weird human things in different parts of the house. All while asking me how do I feel and if I like it here. I do not know where I am, but it’s cool so far, I guess. They feed me in a different dish then I’m use too. This food tastes better too. My water bowl is much cleaner now and it’s even inside the house. They haven’t kicked me out of the house yet, so I don’t really know what is going on. They begin to climb in the biggest bed I have ever seen! With all my might I run into their room and onto the bed with them. Shiloh greets me with open arms. I plop down on top of him and drift away to sleep to the gentle pets he gives me on my head. Right before I completely drift off I hear Shiloh say...

“You’re home now Demon.”
