I was once a powerful deity who did as I pleased. There was nothing I couldn't have and nowhere I couldn't go. It grew boring at some point, and I decided to live amongst the humans and play mischievous games with them. While most could not see me, there were some who knew of my presence and were able to ward off magic with what seemed to be simple hand gestures. This amused me, and my interest in the humans was piqued more than it had ever been before.

Curious as a kitten, I followed one around for a long time and learned that there were deities living among the humans who actually helped them. At first, I tried to counteract the magic that came from these human-like deities with the intent of showing them that there are more powerful forces at work and in the face of that, they are useless. But the one that I followed. . . oh, that one. . . would look at me directly in the eyes and simply say, "not today, my friend."

This angered me so, and a new resolve formed. I would bring him into my realm and let the oni drain him of his powers! The day came when I knew he would be most distracted, helping out some pathetic young girl, and in that moment I became frozen, and for the first time in centuries, I was in awe. He looked at me with a firm, unwavering gaze and gently spoke these words: "My friend, you are hereby banished to the wastelands where you will serve this girl, grow stronger as she does, and not return until you have proven your loyalty to her."

It took many years before she even knew of my existence, and in that time, I had many visits from the one who called me his "friend." I grew attached to him, although I didn't realize it until he no longer returned, preceding the days in which the girl came to discover me, and ached for his companionship. The girl was annoying and stubborn; yet there was something about her that made me once again curious about the affairs of the human world. So now I serve this one, reluctantly at first, but now with a sense of purpose. . . and something else. . . .
