Am I man... Or machine?

He turned to her and laughed. It was a tinny sort of laugh, dulled with the low static that hangs in his projected voice. The laugh slowed to a low chuckle as he looked at her, his red eyes gleaming with amusement. His jaw hinges made a nearly inaudible squeak as he moved his mouth while the speaker behind it said, "And what makes you think you are any more human than I am?"

---

It was to be a simple procedure.

"Fallen in the line of duty" was what they said. At least, that's what they had said at first. But then a miracle happened. His heart started beating again. Beating for his country, like it had done countless times before.

So he recovered. As much as a man without the use of his legs and most of his other limbs could recover, at least.

They said that it was a miracle that the bullets didn't do any more damage to his body. That his near inability to make his mouth move to form the works he wanted to say and chew the food he wanted to eat was "better than not moving it at all". That the fact the muscles in his fingers were able to move just enough to type on the text-to-speech device they had installed to his wheelchair was "fortunate". That how his girlfriend had left him when he accepted the invitation into the suit and tie bodyguard system then got back with him after he lost the ability to hug and kiss her was "lucky".

He hated them for that.

But when they approached him with a way to free himself from his prison of flesh, he decided he hated them a lot less.

They had said it could be dangerous, but had they also said it could result in a job more important to the country than his last one. "More important," his mechanically made voice had replied, "Than protecting the leader of our country?"

They said yes. So he accepted.

And his mind was freed from his body. Freed and placed inside a new one of metal and wire, brimming with electricity. They told him after the procedure that his new body had parts from his old body, parts that were moderately unscathed by the bullets he had taken to protect his leader, and that they were mixed in with the cords, pistons, and other mechanical parts of his new body. They then went into great detail about what they had done to him in their excitement with their success, but their new cyborg tuned them out in favor of beginning to adapt to his new body. He could feel it whir and click even when he remained still. It was as if it breathed in its own language. And, deep within his chassis, he could feel his old heart beating as artificial supplements kept it alive.

He freaked out a little then. It took weeks of physical and mental therapy to get him used to his new form. "It was to be expected," they said.

After all the training on how to walk on four legs, how to speak through his advanced system using his mind, how to shoot his installed weapons, and how to do other things he didn't think he'd ever have to learn how to do, he was ready to begin in the field. Wherever they needed to send him, he would travel to. Whatever they needed him to do, he would commit to. Whoever they needed him to fight, he would lock on to. All for his country.

But he couldn't help but wonder, was code name TE-0623 the same man he used to be?
