Hello! And welcome to the Fairydust Cafe! My name is Sweetcreme, or Sweetie if you'd prefer, and I'll be serving you! Today's specials are the cinnamon chocolate cheesecake and prismberry tea.
So, what can I get- I'm sorry? What about my antlers and hooves? Well, yes, I suppose I could be considered a type of faun. But I'm not a faun. Not really, anyway. I mean, I haven't always looked like this. Oh dear, this is a bit hard to explain. I suppose I should start at the beginning....
It was about a year ago. I was a young fawn - as in a young deer - and I lived with my mother and our herd in Thornwood Forest. It was a peaceful life for the most part. There was always the occasional hunter, wolf or wildcat but we rarely lived in fear. As long as my mother was near me, I could graze and play without worry.
But one unusually cold autumn, we were trekking through the forest looking for fresh grass. A bitterly chill wind threatened to bring an equally frigid rain with it. I stayed close to Mother who did her best to shield me but she was weakened from hunger and exhaustion. Finally, the herd stopped in a clearing. Tall trees and brambles made a makeshift shelter from the storm on its way. There was not much to eat other than dying grass and tree bark but it was better than nothing and we were able to at least half-fill our bellies. We then all laid down together for the night, keeping close to each other for warmth.
I awoke a few hours later to a loud rumbling. It was still dark and it had begun to rain. I then realized the rumbling I heard wasn't thunder but my mother's stomach. My heart broke for her and I felt guilty for eating as much as I did. I decided to leave the group and just gather some more leaves and bark for her breakfast.
As I tore at the tough, bitter strips of bark a peculiarly wonderful scent reached my nostrils. It was warm, nutty and even sweet. I had never smelled anything like it. Curious, I followed it. Before long I came upon another large clearing. A small cottage sat among evergreens. Strange "fruit" dangled from their branches from twine. They were shaped like discs and covered with a sweet, creamy substance with nuts, seeds or berries.
Hungrily I bit into one of the discs. It was the most amazing thing I had ever tasted! I devoured every last crumb before moving on to another. It was then that I realized the delightful smell wasn't coming from those from from the little cottage. I gingerly stepped up to the wooden door and pressed my nose against it. To my surprise, it popped open easily. Warm, sweet air greeted me as I stepped inside.
