In the beginning there were three of us. There was me, Riley, the hippy who was in tune with the earth and nature. Then there was Quinn - crazy Quinn, ever changing and unpredictable as the wind he wielded. The final member of our merry band was Kieran, fierce and uncompromising, like the fire that was under his control. Earth, Wind and Fire - we joked that we sounded like a disco band, but together we were meant to be noble guardians protecting the land from evils that came from within - vile mutants, terrifying demons, angry ghosts. You name it, we fought it. Things were not easy though, no matter how hard we tried to mesh ourselves together, there was always something we'd forget or loose sight of - we were just children after all, teenagers plucked from whatever ether the fates had decided on. Sometimes (well, most of the time) our victories were pure luck rather than any definite skill.
We thought we were getting stronger. We had been doing this for months, we had to have been right? But life is an arms race and no matter how much we improved and tightened up our opponents did too.
One day, we faced a creature unlike anything we had ever seen before. We’d thrown down with five horned demons, seven headed ghosts and mutants that were more claws and teeth than anything else but this… this was out of this world. It was bigger and meaner than anything we'd ever faced before and whatever luck had been blessing us before, well, it began to run out. We tried, but we couldn’t win and so we ran away and regrouped.
The day we met Andros, we had confronted the creature for what was looking like the last time… for us. We had tried to create a fire storm to reduce it to cinders out - but this beast wasn't going down.
It had knocked Quinn and I flying and Kieran was cornered when a flash of blue energy exploded onto the scene. In an explosion of steam Andros appeared and fashioning what I can only describe as a lasso of water, he surrounded the beast with his water rope. Using this power, he bound it, beat it and finally sucked all of moisture out of it, until it was nothing but a withered husk. We were pretty amazed but when we approached him to thank him - he stared us down coldly.
Andros then explained who he was. He was older, wiser and a little more violent, and once upon a time he had been like us, but his mission had taken him away from our land for a few years. He had been alone and so he trained, gained experience and grown stronger until the monsters he was facing had decided to head back to the land he had once called home. He knew he had to return but this time he wasn’t prepared to face it them alone.
He needed us and as we needed him, but his condition was that he would be charge, and he would train us until every muscle hurt but the pay off is that we would never win by pure dumb luck again. Quinn was the first to agree, and then me. Kieran was more reluctant but he’s always been prideful and hey, water and fire never really did get along. But he agreed in the end too, and our trio became a quartet.
Now, it is like he has always been here. He drills us daily, trains with us, heals us - and when we gain a victory, it doesn't feel so much like pure dumb luck any more. He's became our leader but he’s more than that now. He's our brother, our teacher, our mentor. He's fierce, noble and at times without mercy - and I'm glad he's on our side.
