The Long Game
The psychology of gaming revolves around rewards. Gamers love the feeling of achievement and progression. Game developers sprinkle rewards throughout the game to keep players motivated. Whether it's levelling up, unlocking new content, or earning in-game currency, rewards drive gamers to keep playing.
I can't remember when I started playing games. My mum used games to help me learn to count with blackjack and spell words with scrabble. That way was far more fun than school. Games became a way to test my mind against their rules. A way to explore the world in these defined and safe ways. Every weekend the family would play board and card games. Monopoly caused way too many fights with my siblings. Little Teena would cry and that was always the time the game had to finish, no matter who was winning. Favourite games included chess, backgammon, gin rummy and battleship. As there was four of us kids, all of them were usually running and you could swap around.
Then we hit adolescence, and discovered Dungeons & Dragons. Every Saturday had some form of campaign going on. Mum was good with forming strategies and was the dungeon master for the first few years. While Jimmy also did sport (he was great at football), we all loved doing games as well. Some of our friends got involved too, and still play with us. Teena especially got into that game. She has a physical handicap with her spina bifida. As her big brother, I was always protective. But her brain is sharp as a tack. She actually ended up the best DM we ever had!
As I got older, I got more into computer games. In fact Teena and I grew closer over gaming online. We had similar likes with games. We still had the family games night, but the online games were our time together. We formed our own in-jokes and language. I'd get all protective, then she'd save my butt!
We all grew older, and I left home for university to study psychology, but online gaming kept us close. I graduated and took a job in a different city, but the internet and more online games than ever before mean that our whole family stays in touch. None quite so much as Teena and I. In fact, when she finishes her law degree (told you she was smart!) she'll be looking for a placement in either our home city or the one I am in. No matter which she goes to, we'll still be connecting with gaming!
